Longer than I want but have to tell the whole story. I get to the tree I was hoping would be open at 4:50 am. Used my climber and am locked in for 5:10. At 6:28 I see a head bright white headlamp lamp walking towards me. So I turn on my little red headlamp just to let this person know I’m on this tree and move along either way. Bc he was literally walking right the the tree I was already seated in. But it was still pretty dark so no worries. Figured the light would clue him in. It didn’t.

He proceeds to walk right to the base of the tree and says well I see you got my tree but it looks like you got my stand too. I’m like WTF? So I tell the guy no this is my stand. The one I came in with and the one I will be leaving with. He is adamant that it’s his. Bc he left it in this exact tree yesterday. I was like well I guess someone came by and stole it. He says yeah you stole it. Tells me he recognizes the bottom of it and it’s the same straps as his. Well as it turns out it’s the same straps as all summit tree stands have since that’s what it came with. It’s a summit mini viper. That’s what I have. He finally tells me his was a summit open shot climber. I’m like well there you go theses are different stands. I’m not your thief. But he’s not done yet. He says the bases are the same on both models (which they actually are I had to google that but not surprised they prob use that base for a lot of their climbers). So now he is claiming I stole just his base. Thats when I officially confirmed he was possibly on the spectrum. So I ask him, you think I woke up at 3:45 am, drove 45 min and walked almost a mile in here with just the top half of my stand hoping I would miraculously find the bottom half of yours I could use. He clearly thought that was a logical thing someone would try.

I think he did leave his stand to claim that tree. And I had that exact tree in mind. From scouting. It’s a good tree. Prob reason he was there day before. But I beat him to it today. And honestly if his stand was there I would have just found another tree. I might have uttered a curse word or two when I saw it there as a place holder but I’m not that worried about a spot to try and get in any sort of confrontation over it. There’s plenty of woods. But it wasn’t there and I’m sure some local did steal it.

The way this trail is there’s only really one parking spot. And he asked me if that was my truck even though he knew it was already. And said yeah ok and walked off. So I’m like great now maybe I’ll have a keyed truck or flat tires when I get back. But no, He was waiting there when I got back to my truck. And still with the same shite. He’s still mad that I stole his stand. I don’t really have anything new to say so I am putting my stuff up and told him it’s still not his. He says now that he’s had time to cool off he MAYBE believes it’s not his but it’s crazy that I was in the same exact tree and his stand was missing. But he still pissed at me for something I didn’t do. No apology nothing. Just gets in his truck and drives off.

He was a younger kid prob 22-28 if I had to guess and I bet good chance he posts here. If you read this you’re an a-hole and handled that about as bad as you could have. This was all In Livingston section of Maurepas WMA off of King George Rd.

I don't understand why anyone would ever leave any of their stuff on public land overnight. The same yahoos that leave trash and beer cans everywhere are the ones who will take anyone's crap if they find it.

This explains a great deal, made a woodcock hunt there twice, both times I had run ins with people - a very rare occurance for me.

I make 5 or 6 hunts there every season, usually around the one mile bayou area off the power line ROW. Both duck and deer hunts and usually only see people at the parking lot. Stick to the swampy area and nobody will bother you, everyone crowds the high ground because they don’t want to deal with waders.

He couldn’t see that yours clearly was a closed front, while his is an open front?? What an idiot!
I would’ve told him that his argument is a confession to breaking the law and that I’m calling the game wardens. You’re not legally allowed to leave a stand on a tree. The law states that stands must be removed from the tree.
I wouldn’t have actually called them, but maybe the threat of it would’ve shut him up.

Is it not illegal to leave your stand on a tree overnight on public hunting land?

Louisiana WMA’s allow you to leave your stand out, but it has to be removed from the tree and in a “non-hunting position” and tagged with the owners name and contact info.

So legally you could only really leave a climber laying against the base of the tree.

If this guy left the climber attached to the tree, then it might have been green jeans that took his stand.

To be fair I don’t know if he left it attached to the tree or just leaning against it. Bc there was no climber anywhere nearby when I got to said tree.

And he also told me he had a camera nearby. I said good I hope you do I can’t wait till you check it and confirm you’re wrong. But he may have just been saying that as a bluff thinking I would cave.

I also asked him why I would pick the same tree? If I really wanted to steal something I personally would move locations to avoid getting caught. He wasn’t really good at any kind of constructive conversation with me though. He had his mind made up when he saw me in “his” tree and there was no changing his mind.

This is why I bought property. I always liked to hunt as a kid but that was on a friend's place. I don't trust people I don't know with high powered rifles so I did not do much hunting for years unless I got an invite to a private property. Finally got a piece of property and hung a 12 cameras not just for the deer. Besides ruining your hunt it is a hassle not worth having to deal with. Same with fishing. I try and find those tucked away spots. It was much easier to find seculsion prior to GPS on every rig.

Every once in a while I think man I’m kind of bored with my lease and maybe I should go hunt a public spot just to mix it up. I then read one of these stories or talk to someone who tells me one just like it and I’m like screw it I’ll just keep hunting my lease and the same 20trees I always hunt!!!

I also kinda wonder if he was just trying to bully you into giving up your stand.

A lot of this management area is hunted by boat. Some jackholes out there will purposely pick a spot to hunt where a boat is already tied to the bank. Hard to figure out if they’re jealous, just want to be an a-hole, or if they’re that stupid. They will also ride around in the canals and bayous at prime hunting hours. I assume they’re trying to shoot deer on the bank from the boat.

Some people just suck.

If you leave something in the woods, you should just expect it to get stolen and consider yourself lucky if it doesn’t.

Can confirm. Last time about a month ago I hunted at Maurepas WMA a 20’s something kept driving up and down the canals by my canoe at prime time. Not trimmed down enough porpoising like a tard.

There’s some places I would go but most shite I’d rather suck start a shotgun.

Sounds like when we used to duck hunt Felsenthal, we would go out and stake out "our hole" at 2-3 am, cook breakfast or sleep in the boat.

Never failed that right at daylight a group of yahoos would come motoring in on us, we would spot light them and holler just to have them set up 100 yards from us

Livingston Parish and public land in one sentence. Not surprised one bit. I’d just sit out hunting until I found a good place before going there.
I’ve dealt with LP folks on river access the last few years. 1/8 might be a standup person, the rest just miserable white trash.
