Crucial will stop selling PC memory to consumers… because of AI

This would normally be a tech board post, but its an example of how AI has become this Locust-like force eating up resources.
If you don't know about Crucial.com, they're been THE go-to source for upgrading memory in your PC or laptop for decades. Cheap, reliable, with a guarantee of the right type of memory for you. But now AI vendors need all the Random Access Memory they can get their hands on, and it has drastically curtailed supply to end users while tripling (or more) retail prices. And now the demand is so severe that Crucial is abandoning end users to commit completely as an AI vendor.
This is going to make every single “smart” device tremendously more expensive. Its going to affect everyone and everything.

“The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage,” Sumit Sadana, EVP and chief business officer at Micron Technology, said in a statement. “Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments.”
The surprise announcement from Micron follows a period of rapidly escalating memory prices, as we reported in November. A typical 32GB DDR5 RAM kit that cost around $82 in August now sells for about $310, and higher-capacity kits have seen even steeper increases.

This is becoming eerily similar to 1980’s Japan when they cannibalized their entire economy to speculate ok real estate.
We all know how that ended

Now all the memory's used to make mammaries.

Just get dat Kingston memory off Amazon.

This will be temporary. The expansion Micron is building here in Boise is MASSIVE. Not to mention the TMSC facility about to come online in Phoenix.

Don’t see how they can prevent resellers from offering it.

Maybe this is the impetus needed to finally go back to less computerized automobiles.
No, you really don’t need a 9 inch iPad on your dashboard

Have you checked RAM prices on Amazon lately?
I got some upgrades for my son for Christmas. Prices had doubled, or even tripled. For all brands. Everything from Hyundai to Hynix is now far more expensive than even just a few months ago. Even the cheap-y Chinese vendors.

But Micron is the one announcing this.

Are they making memory? Serious question. I don't know. I thought they were just making chips.

Ya, and I'm saying it'll be temporary until the new facility here comes online.

They don't make the specific DRAM chips, but they make other RAM types as well as some of the backend stuff for the full DRAM module. In other words, that facility coming online in Phoenix will also take some of the pressure off of current demand.

It’s an issue but the market will meet it in time.

Define “in time.”
I bought a 64 GB Corsair DDR5 kit in March for $225. That same exact memory is now retailing for $900.

I'm surprised Samsung's not trying to move into the market. I'm sure they could leverage their NVME experience to ramp up RAM production to help meet demand. There's clearly the market there.

Crazy, I've always used their "upgrade advisor" app to give me a quick view of the upgrades I could do on a computer.

Micron killing off crucial just shows you they have no desire to temporarily up production in a cyclical market.
All memory is produced overseas and haven't seen anyone even try to make a push here in the States.
RAM generally ebbs and flows with demand, but this looks like they are going to dedicate their production to commercial outfits.
Going to be expensive for retail for a awhile unless the AI bubble bursts soon.
The Chinese brands are going to be the only market for retail

I buy for upgrades over the course of 12+ months. The 128GB (no, I don't need it) of Crucial DDR5 was $308 (bought this spring). The particular kit is now unavailable, but is now over $650.
Explain to me the business case for AI again?
Generated by AI, probably at the expense of hundreds of dollars of compute, but any moron could have told you that for the price of a pint of Guinness.

Is that based on anything Micron has said?
It sounds like all capacity will be going to commercial buyers as they can't keep up with the demand and datacenter buyers are much better margin than consumer.
If it was temporary until their new facility came online, it's pretty odd to publicly announce an indefinite (permanent?) withdrawal from the market.
