UK will eliminate trial by jury for most cases

The justification is that it'll ease the case backlogs because juries take too long in the view of the Ministry of Justice. All but the most serious cases would be handled by a Judges-only system.

Trial by jury only works in societies where a large majority would be considered rational and competent. Anyone whos done jury duty knows there are a lot of irrational incompetent idiots.

Have you ever participated in the jury duty process? Scares the crap out of me that my life could be determined by my peers.
That being said, I’m not sure what the UK is doing is any better. And, there better be a somewhat easy way to remove judges that suck.

Also consider the average Brit views the government in a very paternalistic light. A holdover from the time of ruling royals having a mandate from heaven and a paternal position. You can imagine in a jury where "the King versus Smith" you would have some bias to the King, even if he is a philandering arse like Charles.
Here in the states the pro-government-as-daddy bias is much less.

These courts are handing out lighter sentences to foreigners for violent crime, including sexual assault, than they are for “mean” social media posts made by native Brits.
