So ive lost about 50 lbs and im feeling pretty good but have plateaued a bit and probably need to start weight training. Im also 58 and probably need it to maintain muscle. Ill be back in the gym soon and am thinking about a pre workout powder. What is the general opinion of using pre workout products and does anyone have a reccomendation?

How much caffeine do you want in it?

I drink enough caffeine during the day and prefer none in my pre workout so I use Gorilla Mode Nitric.

What's wrong with a shot of espresso 30 minutes before you get to the gym?

Personally, I hate pre-workout powders.

If I were in your situation, I'd try going to the gym for a few weeks first to see if you even need a pre-workout.

Caffeine, caffeine, caffeine. The made up "proprietary" blends and odd amino acids existed in the 90s, but the caffeine is new. But y'all will spend $50 a month for a cup of coffee and oat grass powder extract in a "pre workout."

Even if you take a shot of expensive arse Nespresso pods, it's 70 cents a day. If you use drip (americano), it's even cheaper. Just put a cup of it in the fridge the night before and shoot it before you leave.

I like an espresso, but my Monster or Ghost Energy drink gives me 150-200mg of caffeine compared to the piddling 60-80mg in an espresso.

I’m not lifting manly weights on a shot of espresso.

Caffeine is just one ingredient among a host of them that have great effects in the gym and after

I’ve tried many of energy drinks and it might be the best I’ve ever had. If you have a Costco membership you can get a case of 18 for $28 instead of paying around $3 a can at a gas station.

I have always been a pre / energy drink junkie.

I got tired of spending $4/day on reigns and shite so a few months ago I bought a 90ct bottle of jet alert 200mg caff pills for $3.00 and it has been awesome. If I need a solid boost for an upcoming workout I take 1.5 about an hour before.

My suggestion is to use the smallest effective dose of caffeine that gets you through your workouts. Do as I say, not as I do. With that being said my current favorite pre-workout formula is Xtremis Cartel El Jefe. Prior to this pre-workout I also really liked Ghost Legend. I like them both for the same reason in that they don't immediately slap you in the face but just give you smooth release of energy and focus during your workout. I can tolerate a lot of caffeine so if you do go this route just half the dose and see how you tolerate it.

I feel it's worth repeating to minimize stimulants in general and you're probably best served with just small amount of caffeine in the form you prefer. Cheers.

I make my own and buy the following individually then mix into a scoopable product:

Caffeine
Beta alanine
L-Theanine
2:1 Citrulline Malete
L-Arginine

That way I know exactly how much I'm getting and theres no fillers/proprietary blends. Its also a good bit cheaper this way
