Should "transgender" people be legally allowed to own firearms?

I just used the word "transgender" for convenience.
We already have in laws in place, that in theory, prevent mentally ill people from legally obtaining firearms.
Currently, SCOTUS allows trans to own them.

The second amendment says all Americans shall hold the right to bear arms. It's cut and dry.

was a transgender the problem?

And yet the Court has consistently allowed some level of reasonable restrictions. People that are mentally ill and interdicted are not allowed to own them, for instance.
Trans people are mentally ill.

On Form 4473, Question 21g asks:
"Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?"

They are very specific and can only be very narrowly applied to a very small number of cases of people with mental health issues. A judge with input from a medical professional are involved in these cases where a person is declared by court as unfit to own a firearm. There isnt some blanket law that strips a certain class of mentally ill folks from owning firearms.

The 4473 specifically has questions regarding felons, drug users, and the mentally ill.

Of all the sensible gun control laws that people could propose, this is the dumbest. Trans people seem to be the segment that is most vilified in our country and from what I have seen probably stand no chance is a real fight. Let them have the capacity to defend themselves.

Yes.
That’s a slippery slope once you stop allowing all Americans the right to bear arms.
Unless they have violated some sort of federal or felony to criminal statute, then unfortunately i would have to i am not gonna violate their constitutional right.
Would not make me any better to say no

That maybe the case but so are a lot of people. Unless a court has made ruling on your mental fitness or a doctor has committed you...you can still own or purchase a gun

Pretty much how SCOTUS ruled...

for good reason. They are mentally unwell freaks that are a scourge on society.

so we make laws now based on evening out the odds of a group being able to win a fight? Well that's....a new one.

Unless they've been adjudicated as mentally ill, and as long as they are legal citizens of appropriate age and with no other convictions, yea they should be able to buy a gun if they want.
I think we should maybe get serious about the adjudication part, though.

How do they define "mentally ill" when determining whether or not someone should own guns? Is it the type of treatment, certain medications, Dr has to specifically state it? Honest questions as I have no idea and it has been way too many years since I had to fill out one of those forms while purchasing a gun.
The scope of that definition will decide if someone that is having a mental health crisis about their gender would qualify as a person that should not be able to acquire a firearm.
Then the next question is, what are the definitions of "mentally ill" that would require someone to turn in the guns. And then, the definitions that would require everyone in the household to then turn in theirs (a lot of these high-profile shootings involve the mentally ill person using someone else's guns)

No. But then I do favor responsible gun ownership.
