Ohio State president expects 'conversation will be had' on Big Ten revenue sharing

During a Tuesday, Sept. 9 interview with USA TODAY that also covered an array of Ohio State-specific and national higher-education topics, Carter addressed questions about two longstanding features of the school’s sports financial picture: Roughly equal sharing of Big Ten revenue among the conference’s longest-standing members and zero dollars in university or student-fee money being used to support the athletics department.
“I don't want to get into the type of conversations that are happening inside the Big Ten,” said Carter, who began at Ohio State on Jan. 1, 2024, after four years as president of the University of Nebraska System. “I would just tell you that we're a proud member of the Big Ten, and that's where we're going to stay. We have … our own bylaws for how we do the distributions. When new members join the conference, they don't always come in at the same share, as you know. So … that's the way our media rights deals are set up. That's how we're set up for now.”
Carter was then asked what he thinks about where this goes four to five years from now, as conferences’ current, respective, television contracts begin winding down.
“We don't have any answers,” he replied. “I will say that there's only a couple of schools that really represent the biggest brands in the Big Ten, and you can see that by the TV viewership. I mean, look what we just went through with the Texas game (Ohio State’s football season opener). ... You know, 16.(6) million people watching that game over the whole game. And it peaked at 18.6 million. It's the most watched opening game in history, third-largest game ever watched in a regular season (on Fox). So, that's what happens when you put the Ohio State brand out there.”
Asked whether that should translate into something different in terms of revenue share, Carter said:
“It doesn't matter what Ted Carter thinks. I think that's going to be a conversation that will be had over time.”

Lost in that is also they’re about to start greasing the students for extra revenue too.
It’s like the last 10-15 years there’s been a huge shift to just absolutely squeeze as much as they (college football, corporations, restaurants, etc…) can.
I have never felt an assault on my wallet from all angles like I have the past few years especially.

True. But he has a point here. The Big Ten has 18 teams and maybe 6 of them move the needle for a national TV audience. The other 2/3 of the conference seems to be content on riding the coattails of the top 1/3 of the conference to landing big TV contracts that they'll get an equal share of.
ETA: I think OSU and the B1G's other top programs will probably push for some form of uneven revenue split where the teams who play to bigger TV audiences and/or finish higher in the rankings will get a bigger slice of the revenue sharing than the bottom feeder schools. Pretty sure Clemson and Florida State were trying to push something similar in the ACC recently.

If Ohio St thinks they deserve more than other Big Ten teams then they probably need to go independent like Notre Dame and get their own tv deals
I'm gonna laugh so hard when teams like Ohio State, Michigan, Bama, etc think they deserve more despite being in Super conferences that set them up for their big tv games.

A lot of people have predicted it, but I wonder how soon teams start to get voted OUT of conferences.
Or more likely, one super conference is formed.

So they are taking the Texas route. Take all the money from the conference, watch the conference crater because of it, then bolt for the SEC leaving the conference in shambles.

OSU has been on Big Noon 23 times. The only team with half as many appearances is Michigan with 17 (like 5-6 of those are OSU/Michigan games).
PSU has 11 and is a distant 3rd

IMO the Big 12 showed that ultimately you have to do revenue sharing evenly for the television and shared revenue stuff if you want to have a stable conference.
Merchandise, alumni donations, and ticket sales among other things will still benefit the bigger names. But the benefits of stability are big for the big names like Ohio State and Michigan as well as the smaller names like Iowa and Illinois.

Uh...hey Ohio State....that's what USC complained about for Decades in the PAC.
And it led to dissolution.
Lets create Super Conferences, then big fish in little pond can't complain.
They're gonna always complain about equal shares because CFB is just a Circus, existing to move the turnstiles and Collect the customers money.
So there will be an algorithm on yearly Revenue sharing division based on:
1) Current rankings/Avg.for pay period
2) Name brand (try defining)
3) Merch Sales
5) Eyeballs avg on games played
Always in flux to reflect the current hot teams get their bigger portion or they'll complain. Sound good?
Better yet, just get to where we're going, quicker...

Now that the Big Ten has consolidated its position the old boy powers are gonna fleece the others real good and deep because they think they have no other option but to take it. Similar to what Texas did in the Big12.

Lost in all of these recent changes is the fact that the few, select schools able to compete now will remain the only schools able to compete over the next 10 to 20 years. There will be far fewer upsets and constant TV and media coverage of the same 9 to 10 teams each year.
