Putin's objective was to establish a back stop against NATO and the Eurocrats. He has accomplished that in two ways, 1 taking 20 per cent of Ukraine physically along the border for a demilitarized zone under the Russia supervision and 2 killing 20 % of Ukrainins male population that may fight or may work in critical industries.

Zelenski at some point will accept Ukraine can only lose in an ongoing war, and ask for peace. The eurocrats are the real villain and need to be set aside

What about the expansion of their border against NATO elsewhere?

Finland’s government plans to increase its reserve by 125 000 soldiers to more than one million by 2031 according to a new proposal just introduced to Parliament. If passed, Finland will have the second largest wartime army in Europe after Russia.

Putin’s plan is working out?

That’s only true if he doesn’t think the rump Ukranian state would become part of NATO.

If so I suspect he would rather take all of it.

Wait until the Ukrainians find out what the EU has planned for them: The replacement of all the people they’ve lost through immigration and battlefield casualties with military aged Muslim men from the third world. They’re going to wish they were part of Russia.

Ukraine has lost the war. Hundreds of thousands are casualties, much property damage has occurred, and they lost control of a significant part of their country.

But Ukrainian survival is a victory.

Putin has lost. His “buffer zone” was the borders of the Russian Empire and/or the USSR. 20% of Ukraine ain’t it! The loss of Moldavia isn’t either.

The extremely strategic Baltic and Arctic loss of Sweden and Finland is a strategic disaster for Putin’s ambitions.

Russia has suffered roughly a million casualties, and about a million more of its citizens have permanently left. These are disproportionately irreplaceable young people.

The West has economically left Russia. Russia has lost most of its lucrative western pipeline markets.

Its armaments export industries have lost their perceived value. Its Soviet stockpiles are depleted. The carefully stockpiled money surplus is gone. And the economy will not be able to transition from the current war economy to a peacetime one without severe contraction and pain.

20% of Ukraine is not compensation for this disaster. Putin will join Csar Nicolas and Stalin as the 3 worse Russian leaders in the memory of Russians!

Putin has used blood and treasure to get a foothold in Ukraine. Balance against what he and Russia have lost and I think you'll find that it was an ill advised move.

We and the EUROPEANS now know...

1. That Putin and the Russian people are OK with invading another country for the flimsiest of reasons. There are no protests or dissent in Russia.
2. Europe is pushing toward 5% GDP spending to defend the continent from the current and future agression.
3. The Russian miliatary is a joke. They should hav crushed Ukrain in two weeks. But due to corruption, poor battlefield tech, poor training, poor leadership and poor planning Ukraine has exacted a pound of flesh from the Russians. Russia could be subdued quickly with the full force of the US and European alllies - and probably would be if not for all their nuclear weapons.

Putin's plan was 2 weeks, not 2 years. I don't think a million Russians fleeing through emmigration and another million dying in battle were in the plan.

I don’t agree. Putin wants all the land of the left bank of the Dneipr. If the West can put troops on the same side of the river as Russia the march to Moscow is much easier.
