Do you leave your porch lights on at night?

Do porch lights deter criminals or highlight entry points into the house?
Do porch lights indicate you are home or that you are away?
Having this conversation with a friend. FWIW, I leave mine on, he leaves his off.
He also says leaving the lights on is an undue burden on the grid and ultimately the climate, unnecessarily increasing the electric bill.

I turn ours off because they're obnoxiously bright and probably annoy the neighbors.

Always on. Homes with the lights off look trashy.

I turn ours off. Daughters' rooms are on the front of the house so it would shine right into her room.

Yes.
All my outside lights are on timers.

Rule of thumb
if Pants are ON, Lights are OFF
if Pants are OFF, Lights are ON
if Pants are ON, Lights are OFF
if Pants are OFF, Lights are ON

Wasn't there a FB trend in past years of having a green porch light to honor veterans?

Off because we have motion lights on the garage and a Ring doorbell. Our address sign on our house is always on though.

Mine are on a light-sensitive timer. They come on at dusk and turn off in the morning.
It's not 100% deterrence to crime, but criminals looking to break into a home are more likely to target a place where it's easier to hide than one with lights everywhere. Along with that, criminals are less likely to target homes which they believe aren't empty (including dogs). When going on trips it's a smart idea to leave a car in the garage/carport as well as have lights, radio and tv set on timers to go on and off at various times during the night.

Mine are not front porch but a sconce on each side of the garage door of which they are on photocells so they come on when the sun goes down. Lights in the back yard are off unless the dog is going out to do business.

I leave mine off, but there are woods by our house and if I leave them on I get clouds of bugs
