Switzerland facing 39% US tariff as president leaves Washington empty-handed

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter left Washington empty-handed on Wednesday after a hastily arranged trip to avert a crippling 39% tariff on the country's exports to the United States, its biggest market, three sources familiar with the matter said.
Keller-Sutter said she had a "very good meeting" with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, but one of the sources said she did not meet with U.S. President Donald Trump or any of his top trade officials.

The Swiss president had been seeking a tariff rate of 10%, which U.S. officials rejected, the source said, adding that most countries are facing much higher tariff rates and reducing the U.S. trade deficit remained Trump's goal.
Washington is potentially seeking more energy and defense exports to Switzerland, according to a Swiss source familiar with the discussions. In return, the Swiss are looking for lower duties on goods sold into the U.S., a leading buyer of Swiss watches, machinery and chocolate.
Trump announced a tariff rate of 31% for Switzerland in April as part of a broad push to reorder global trade, but increased the threatened tariff to 39% last week.

Economists can try and bash Trump all day for his tariffs policy but this plan looks like its going to be a home run.

Trump better leave Swiss Cake Rolls alone. I'm fat for a reason.

Trump said he would leave pharmaceuticals alone, which is a big piece of it, but could raise those to 250% within the next 18 months. Now they are really shatting a brick.
Perhaps they can pass around a hat at the next Davos gathering

I've been very openly critical of Trump in this term. While I realize there are a lot of gears in motion and we cannot see most of them, Trump is running a second term without having to worry about reelection, so I feel as if he should be absolutely scorching earth.
That said, I don't know how anyone can fail to admire how he is dealing with the overwhelming majority of these leaders. He's putting them rightfully in their places on trade and eloquently dragging sack across their foreheads instead of continuing to capitulate to a globalist agenda like every other President since WW2. At least temporarily gone are the days when everyone else fleeces us and takes advantage.
We are THE world power, and it feels good to actually feel like it again. The complete snubbing of the jackass snake LeBlanc from Snow Mexico was just beautiful.

It’s the 3 names curse. Nobody wants the chicks with 3 names.

I just don't understand why anybody would want tariffs on anybody either to import or export.
There should be no such thing as tariffs, import duties, import controls or anything like that. We buy your stuff we like, you can buy our stuff, no tax or tariff either way.
I can only understand a slight bit of protectionism on critical and defense related stuff like steel and so on.

Therein lies the problem. Too many people look at the world the way they wish it were, rather than the way it is. These tariffs are no surprise to anyone. They could have simply dropped theirs when Trump took office. Instead, they called his bluff and are now paying the price for that.

I mean, the start has been quite sizzling imho.
The question is, how much is he going to turn up the heat.
So far, I’m not finding much to be disappointed in.

In an ideal world there would be no need. But we don't live in an ideal world and despite the nonsense spewed by partisans posing as economists, it's not possible to run persistent large trade and budget deficits without severely damaging your currency and your economy. Since our Congress is not willing or able to fix (or even moderate the negative trend of) either of those problems, tariffs are a crude but potentially effective way for a president to bypass their incompetence/malfeasance and try to slow our careening course to economic destruction.

Let's put aside Switzerland for a moment and talk about the European Union.
Their first offer was zero tariffs for us and the same for you on industrial goods, which is what Trump wants to "Make America Great Again" with, steel, cars, engines, etc. Essentially what I suggested above.
Yet Trump rejected it out of hand and gave no explanation. Why? Due to donors or something? What is the reason, I don't get it.

Oh I agree, if we do 15 they do 15 (percentage of tariffs), 10 if the other guys do ten.
But why reject zero vs zero, it's equal which is what President Trump said was his goal.
It reminds me of the tv show Shark Tank where the inventors offer, say 20 percent of their company for 400,000 dollars (or whatever) and one of the Sharks says they will agree to that and then the inventors start being jerks and acting like it was nothing but a sham. Well, I am sorry, I thought Trumps policy (which he said many times on the campaign trail) was that tariffs should be equal for both sides. He even said that in the Rose Garden when he had that big chart out if I recall correctly.

I was told by the most esteemed scholars on here SFP, Rogerthefluffer, RonRicjks etc that he has no goal to reduce the deficit

Trump is an absolute stud in these negotiations. Fight me if you disagree.
