I would buy that if he were not also raising tariffs on countries like the UK and Brazil and other with who we have a trade SURPLUS for years.

The trade must also be fair, no hidden barriers etc.

I also like the 10-15% tariff regardless of the situation. We are the largest customer in the world WE SHOULD have the best price.

The hubris of switzerland, little piss ant country coming over to "negotiate" a surplus. Tell them to pass the hat at their next davos gathering.

While I agree we need a baseline tariff on the EU, the VAT argument I dont understand.

Goods imported face a VAT tax. Goods manufactured in the EU face a VAT tax at the factory. The tax is the same, just the origin different.

Why? You apply for the VAT refund on the way out, shows up on your credit card in a month or two. The big retailers in Europe fill out all the paperwork for you. Did this with Gucci last year.

The watches are a perfect anecdote for the current situation. I remember when Rolex sued Costco because it was sourcing their watches from European authorized dealers and then selling them at substantial discounts as the result of the markup Rolex set for sales to its US dealers.

Costco is acting as a "diverter", I call them pirates. Its a huge business in international trade. Many US companies have no reps to sell their products in, lets say Argentina. So a diverter calls up Dickie clothing and says I am a wholesaler in Argentina, I want to sell down here, Im willing to pay cash, but the price has to be good.

They figure out a price, its discounted, but Dickies does not care, its all bonus business. Me, as the wholesaler agree to cash. You just get the container to the Miami port and I will handle ocean freight, I have a set price with my shipper for all my goods.

The container arrives in Miami.....and I ship it to New York. Since you are charging more for US customers, I can pay freight to Miami and then to New York and still make a tidy profit.

Its why you can go to any "china town" in an American city and find Gilette razors with chinese or spanish labeling and cheaper than you buy at your local grocer.

Reciprocal?

Weakening one of our European allies seems like a great plan.

Switzerland eliminated all tariffs on industrial goods from all countries, including the United States, as of January 1, 2024. This means over 99% of U.S. goods enter Switzerland duty-free, covering nearly all industrial products.

But why reject zero vs zero, it's equal which is what President Trump said was his goal.

Because he can. We don’t need you, you need us. It’s called a position of strength. It’s nice to finally have a President that does what is best for America. Europe is in decline. Enjoy the ride down.

The only one paying here is for now US companies that sell stuff made in Europe, that includes every grocery store that sells Heineken for example, but after a period of time that will include consumers as companies/stores start to pass the tariff on to consumers. This is nothing more than a hidden tax hike where people will end up bitching about the product or store and not about White House effectively raising taxes.

Zero against zero is the way to go. We buy your watches, you buy our John Deer tractors for your frams. No tarriff on anyone.

Another example of Trump being an idiot. A total misunderstanding of global trade.

The only reason Trump likes tariffs is he thinks it gives him individual negotiating power over the world.

His constant flip flopping is pathetic and weak. It proves he has no real ideology and is literally throwing shite against the wall.

Where do y'all get this smooth brained shite? A VAT is just a sales tax. It isn't protectionist, it isn't discretionary. Domestic goods are taxed exactly the same as imports under a VAT

Retarded influencers. Its their scripture.

Their view of world trade is childish at best.

The Poorest US States Are Wealthier Than Major European Economies
by THEFUTURE.TEAM
January 8, 2025

Some of the least affluent states in the United States are outpacing major European economies in terms of GDP per capira,

As of the third quarter of 2024, Mississippi’s GDP per capita was €49,780, nearly matching Germany’s €51,304. The US state sits comfortably above several major European nations, including Spain, Italy, and France.

Following Mississippi in the rankings are West Virginia, Arkansas, Alabama, and South Carolina, all of which have higher GDP per capita than economies like Spain and Italy.

On the flip side, the wealthiest areas in the US—New York and the District of Columbia—boast significant GDPs, with New York’s reaching €107,485 and the District of Columbia’s soaring to €246,523.

When compared to European economies, the GDP per capita ranges from €15,773 in Bulgaria to €125,043 in Luxembourg. The EU’s average is €40,060, while the US surpasses that with an average of €80,023. Among Europe’s largest economies, Germany leads with €51,304, followed by the UK at €48,441, France at €44,365, Italy at €37,227, and Spain at €33,070.

You know, in a perfect world, there would be no need for tariffs... However, we do not live in a perfect world and we never will... These countries have taken advantage of the US for far too long in many areas including trade and it is time that they pay up...

Correct

And MAGA wants us to be more like these "major European economies."
