They were significantly more tolerant, educated, intellectual, and advanced etc than Europe in 1200s etc but then that eventually all changed dramatically.
My question is why or what happened to the Arabs to make them stuck in 12/13 century?

Well for the most part the Muslim world was under one rule up until this time.
It fractured into many different rulers and subsets of the religion and a lot of that shite still just what fricks the region up today is the Muslim on Muslim hate

Genesis Ch. 16, Verses 11 & 12 give an accurate summation:
11 The angel of the Lord also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.
You shall name him Ishmael,
for the Lord has heard of your misery.
12 He will be a wild donkey of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward all his brothers.”

Europe got its act together and stabilized a good bit after this time period, generally speaking.

Yep. And they could likely manage it themselves had the western nations led by the UK not dramatically fricked up the redrawing of the borders of the middle east nations. They forced people who hate each other to be in the same country rather than drawing the lines along natural, existing religious borders. Led to an assload in instability and infighting.

The Mongols sacking Baghdad in the 1200’s was devastating. Lot of knowledge and scholarship lost and set back. Crusades and Reconquista probably didn’t help. Political instability leading to rise in religious orthodoxy, which can be a bit closed minded to science, ideas, industry and secular education. Averse to foreign knowledge, which the Euro’s thrived on. I’m sure it’s way more complex, though.

One of my biggest historical “what ifs” entails how much better the world would be if the ME had continued to flourish and develop

Europe advanced, and the Middle East didn’t. Mohammed’s islam is built for that era.

They’re still in the 12-1300’s.

Some of these areas are very diverse, like Damascus. No way to split that up without trouble.
And some of the people who are the same religion, Muslim, hate each other based on ethnicity, not religion.
Kind of crazy you can make a majority Muslim country and they still hate each other.
Maybe the problem is them.
