How Amazon’s Broken Returns Process Is Driving Sellers To Leave Amazon

Returns on Amazon are free and easy for shoppers, but they're risky and expensive for the small businesses that sell a majority of the goods on the world's biggest e-commerce site. Returns have driven some sellers to exit the popular Fulfillment by Amazon program, while others told CNBC they'd like to leave the platform altogether. At the heart of the problem is a big rise in returns fraud, which has led to customers mistakenly receiving used products when they ordered something new. In two particularly egregious examples involving baby products described to CNBC, Amazon sent customers used diapers and a chiller with someone else's rotten breastmilk inside.

We need to update the TL;DR memes to “didn’t watch”

The scammers will stay. This only hurts small operations.

ad time jump from the current range of 2.5 to 3.5 minutes per hour to a range of 4 to 6 minutes per hour.

Imagine ordering a swim diaper for your baby and when you open the Amazon package the diaper already has shite in it

I think my crabby old man persona is starting to come out and low effort posts like this are the vehicle.
Hell, there are odds even OP didn’t watch it, just thought the headline was interesting and reposted it.

We ordered one of those high chairs that attaches to the table from Amazon. Opened the box, thing was covered in food. Smelled like rotting food. Nasty shite.

I too am an old man, but I actually don't like the youtube and twitter embeds.

I've shopped less and less from Amazon. It's cheap Chinese shite, and even the supposed good stuff gets bucketed with the cheap Chinese shite.

The embed thing was a mistake.

I ran it thru an AI to summarize:
The CNBC video "How Amazon’s Broken Returns Process Is Driving Sellers To Leave Amazon" explains how Amazon's easy return policy for customers is creating costly and risky problems for sellers, especially those using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)[1].
Key points:
- Returns fraud is rising sharply, with some customers returning soiled or damaged items like poopy diapers or breastmilk chillers with rotten milk, which Amazon sometimes resells as new, damaging sellers' reputations and sales[1].
- Return rates on Amazon are much higher than other marketplaces, sometimes triple, causing sellers to lose money due to high reverse logistics costs and fees. Processing a return can cost sellers about 30% of the product price, forcing many to raise prices or tell customers to keep items[1].
- Amazon introduced new return fees for sellers with high return rates and added warning labels on frequently returned items, which has helped reduce returns by about 5% recently. Sellers also gained some control over returns, such as opting out of auto-generated return labels for expensive items and appealing fraud cases with photo evidence[1].
- Despite these changes, many sellers want to leave Amazon due to the financial strain and lack of direct customer communication, but they feel compelled to stay because of Amazon's large customer base[1].
- Some sellers outsource returns inspection to specialized companies that rigorously check and resell returned products to reduce waste and avoid landfills, addressing the environmental impact of returns which generated 29 million metric tons of carbon emissions in 2024[1].
- The video highlights the emotional and business toll on sellers dealing with fraudulent returns and unsafe products being resold, leading some to quit FBA or Amazon entirely to protect their brand and customers[1].
In summary, Amazon's returns system benefits customers but burdens sellers with high costs, fraud, and reputational risks, prompting some to exit the platform despite recent improvements in return management[1].

I ordered a small Craftsman socket set a couple years ago and the box had clearly been opened.
Once opening it, it was evident that it had been returned by a scammer.
The socket wrench had been replaced by an old broken off brand, and 3 sockets were missing.

Sure, but you have to shift thru all the crap to try to find the good stuff. Amazon doesn’t make it easy to filter it out, and still don’t know what you are gonna get.
I’m one that stopped ordering majority of things from them during covid.
