This is a bill making its way through the Louisiana Legislature. I just thought it was interesting, as it could have some effect on recruiting...

Present law (R.S. 17:3702) provides definitions related to intercollegiate athletics.
Proposed law retains present law and further defines an "international intercollegiate athlete".
Present law (R.S. 17:3703) provides that an intercollegiate athlete at a postsecondary education institution can earn compensation for the use of the athlete's name, image, or likeness.
Proposed law clarifies that present law does not apply to a nonresident international student athlete unless they have obtained permanent legal status in the U.S.
Proposed law (R.S. 17:3705) limits the amount of athletic scholarships awarded to students who are citizens of a foreign country to 25% of scholarships allowed to be given for an academic year per roster within an athletic program.
Proposed law prohibits an international intercollegiate athlete from receiving an athletic scholarship if they have previously received a salary or financial assistance from a professional sports organization.

If this law takes the israli guard off our basketball team I will be upset.
I think this is a dumb law outside of allowing any student regardless of nationality to earn NIL. There is no reason to limit the athletic scholarships of foreign students. The schhols need to put the best product possible in competition for every sport regarldless of where the athletes hail from.

This is stupid. Aside of mostly football, you have international athletes in every sport. International athletes get spots on elite rosters because they have elite talent. Don't cap that because some Karen wants her son or daughter to be given something they didn't earn.

I think this has something to do with the Last-Tear Poa situation. Wasn't she prohibited from earning NIL money? I thought that was a federal law or NCAA rule though.

This would be the death of every non revenue sport at the university. It would be a massive blow to the university's reputation and status so I'm sure it will pass.
