Employer provided retirement healthcare coverage

My employer does not offer. Was talking to other co workers and was amazed about how many did know that this was the case. Is this common? Both questions, employers offering and employees not understanding that they basically have to work till 65/medicare to continue having healthcare.

You must see your doctor a lot then.

How many employees are working for this company?
Nevermind, I just noticed you're from Livingston Parish.

You can always marry your boyfriend and get on his insurance.
But it’s only common if you have under 50 employees.

Find a new job.
This is a part of compensation IMO. Especially when factoring in my wife and kids.

Is what common, for employers to not offer healthcare or for employees to not know their employer doesnt offer healthcare? I am not sure I understand what you're asking.

Go somewhere else.
That’s pretty standard to offer health insurance.. even shitty HDHP plans at minimum.
That should tell you everything about that company.

Is it really standard for companies to offer access to their health plans to employees who have left the company? That’s news to me. I know ERISA has some provisions that allow for continued coverage for a short time.

Not really sure what you're trying to say or ask

I’m in the same situation.
This used to be a benefit most employers offered, but that’s no longer the case. It’s a benefit that would be valuable to employees that want to retire in their late 50’s or early 60’s. And I work for a global company that has many thousands of employees.
The solution is to just buy an ACA insurance policy (or similar). If anyone knows of another option, post it here.
I’m not working til 65. No chance of that.

Very rarely do companies offer that. This is nothing new. You have to buy your own if you retire early.

This is what I mean, don’t want to work till 65, but healthcare plans on the open market are high!!

No shite. You're shielded from the actual cost because your employer usually pays a significant chunk of it. It's sad that you've gotten this old and are just now figuring this out.

How many years have you worked with your company? Did you not read your benefits package closely or talk with someone in HR about it?
Posted on 6/6/25 at 8:58 am to crownroyaltiger
Yes, that's common and part of the reason a lot of people stick around until they're 65. Many can afford to retire before then, but the insurance takes a huge hit of their monthly income.
