Do we still need iodine in our salt?

This feels like some remedy for a 19th century deficiency like scurvy.
What's the current point of this? We just keep doing it because we've always done it?

If you eat seafood, as in saltwater caught, then no.

Unless you eat a lot of seaweed, then yes.
Saltwater seafood too but you'd need to eat it daily. Most Americans are definitely not doing that. South Louisiana might be okay, but they're an extreme exception

Take an iodine supplement like Lugols. Keep it out of your salt.

Not if shrimp are a regular part of your diet

It doesn’t take much iodine to have enough in your diet.
But places where seafood is not a regular staple can be deficient in it.

some people do. many dont. I dont think there are any indications it is harmful but plenty of non-iodized salt is available.

Just take a multivitamin if you're worried about any deficiencies.
Or eat things besides McDonald's chicken nugget value meal.

Depends on how you feel about goiters.

I have no thyroid so my answer is no.

I already have a double chin I don’t need no goiter to make me completely into jabba. Bring on the iodine

AI says: While the general U.S. population is generally considered to have adequate iodine intake due to iodized salt availability, there's growing evidence suggesting a resurgence of iodine deficiency, particularly among pregnant women and certain population groups. This is due to factors like reduced salt intake, reliance on non-iodized processed foods, and a decrease in dairy consumption.
I’ll add that more folks are using Kosher salt, which does not typically contain iodine.
