Parents... please keep talking to your kids about cell phones and "deleting"

Most adults know this, most kids do not... when you post things on social media / send texts around, nothing is truly deleted forever.
My kids are not involved, but I continue to see and hear about kids get in horrible situations because of the pictures and texts they take / post / send and then think it deletes after 15 seconds or after they hit a button or whatever.
Most of the time, of course, the parents are completrely dumbfounded and "oh I had no idea my baby would do that"
When I say kids... i mean like 12-15 year olds. And it's not just the kids that we think of as juvenile delinquents... it's smart kids, honor kids, good kids, the kids who play sports, the kids in the band, public school, catholic school, etc.
Sending inapporpirate things over the wireless also leads to another big issue with these kids, which is the cyber bulling that takes place.
Kids are stupid. Your kids, my kids, all kids are dumb. If I had a smart phone when I was in middle school, high school, college, goodness knows how much trouble I would have gotten into. Either by me taking / sending inappropriate things, or by others taking pictures and sending of me doing inappropriate things.
Adults in their 40s like me... we can sit back with our friends and laugh and reminisce about all the dumb stuff we did. But there is no evidence. These kids today do not have that luxury.

Maybe don't post stuff that will haunt you later.
I get though that kids, and adults, don't think at all before they post.

The problem is, the narcs are only invovled when kids do this.

what's your stance on 16 yr olds?

You bring up a good point. It's probably not going to change how kids behave, but you make a good point nonetheless.
There's so many issues. I mean, imagine a vindictive ex. All it would take is to piss off some girl and have her post all of your most private photos/conversations. I could see even a well-intentioned person looking pretty bad under certain circumstances.

My boy got his phone taken away by his mom and I for a dumb text message just a day after a serious talk about this very issue.
I'm learning kids just aren't ready no matter how much we try to teach them.
I was a good kid, alter boy, good grades, respectful, etc. The second away from adults I cussed, got in fights, and acted like a clown. That's all fine personality wise, I just wasn't doing all those things via text messages.
My boy is no different than me, just more eyes watching his actions because other parents also read there kids' text messages. It kinda sucks for the kids because we expect them to behave better than we did.

Kids know more about this shite than we do. My son has never even held the phone up to his ear like we all used to, everything is FaceTime or Snapchat or whatever they use these days.

Internet information is like herpes, it lasts forever even if you don’t see it most of the time.

And you weren’t taking selfies doing those things / people weren’t using phones to record you doing those things

If the older voice of reason in my now could go back and tell me not to do half the dumb crap I did, I'd be a completely different person.
I got a 15 year old nephew star football player in high school and his hormones are going insane right now apparently. He got into a fight for the first time the other day, and he has made some decisions with girlfriends that makes you concerned about teen pregnancy.
His mom talks to him constantly about these decisions and he is surprisingly receptive, but most teenagers don't have the voice of reason in the heat of the moment unfortunately.

Good message but I hardly think they are working under the assumption that it deletes within 15 seconds et al.

So what happened?
No one particular incident but lots of various inappropriate pictures and videos going around which sometimes leads to in person conflict and online conflict

We talk about this ALL THE TIME with our kids. Once it leaves your phone, no matter what you think is going to happen, it's out there forever. And so often, it's just a Google search away. Whether you believe it or not, potential employers WILL do a quick Google Search of your name to see what comes up- you don't want to be embarrassed by something you did in high school that still haunts you years down the road.
