Maybe so. I'm very sorry to hear that. We try to make everyone proud, so if I can do anything for you, please don't hesitate.

So for my very first trip to Opie's, what should the wife and I order? (She's very picky, but I will eat anything)

Opie I received my $10 gift certificate in the mail. Hope to get in for dinner in time to use it. Thanks that was a nice surprise.

no joke - get the redfish. its great.
blackened shrimp and boudin balls are good for appetizers......i believe the crab claws were a little sweet....he has a burger on the menu that looks awesome...but i havent eaten it

At a typical cajun restaurant, my wife will eat fried catfish, fried shrimp, or etoufee. And she'll always eat a burger anywhere, with only cheese and ketchup on the side to dip it in.

Is the redfish real redfish? My fiance heard paul prudhomme talking the other day saying commercial fishing of redfish is no longer allowed. He said that if you see redfish on a menu it is going to be black drum. The only way to obtain redfish is to get it yourself. Is this info correct?

Not even close.
Refishing in Louisiana was prohibited in the 70's.
Any redfish you see on a menu is farm raised in Texas, then shipped to LA. Each lot has it's on confirmation number from wildlife and fisheries, which is double checked at Both shipping and receiving points. If the vendor receives even one more redfish than on the confirmation number from that lot, he's ticketed and fined.
Frozen, however, same process, is usually farm raised in China.
Black drum will not taste as fishy, and will "puff" more when cooked. I honestly prefer Black drum over Redfish.
We have on our menu at the restaurant that we serve a substituted fish (yes, tilapia or black drum) when redfish is 'fishy' tasting during certain times of the year.
I always believe in being honest with my customers, and they trust me to use the highest quality ingredients we can possibly get our hands on. I'll take something off the menu if I would not eat it myself.

I need to find one of these farms! I would love to visit with my rod n reel. That would be like finding a hole of them during winter.

Opie,
Two quick questions:
1. Do you take to-go orders?
2. Out of curiosity, why are some of the items pictured on the website not included in the downloadable menu (or is the download menu the "to-go" menu)?
Thanks Hoss!

I agree with this and don't know why people have a problem with it.

This I do have a problem with. To me Talapia is just tasteless............nor is it even a native species. As long as its not hidden information I see no problem tho.

There is also a big thickness difference between tilapia and drum.. I could see why it would be better than a fishy tasting fish though. I just would not order it.

Oh ok. Then he must have been saying on the radio that fresh caught gulf redfish were not going to be seen on menus. That it is farm raised. Thanks for the info, I was wondering about the specifics for quite some time.
We will be there soon for the 1 dollar beer and good food!

Actually redfish was determined a game fish in 1988 a couple of years after Paul Prudomme invented blackened redfish or a couple of years after the country discovered his blackened redfish. The commercial fisherman fished it out almost overnight.
Mississippi still has a commercial redfish harvest although it is small and rod and reel only.
The gill net ban just a year or so after that was what really made the fish comeback.
Farm raised redfish is great. I like black drum as well and I can tell the difference in the looks alone. Not in the taste. Black drum is not as skinny.
Tilapia on the other hand is just a vehicle to pour sauce on. Absolutely tasteless and I will not eat them.
Looking for something good at Opies? Try his fried shrimp. Big and seasoned well and fried perfectly.
I normally cook redfish at home so I seldom order it out.

Can't wait to get back down to Baton Rouge Opie. I've heard nothing but good things about your place so I'm anxious to try it. I just glanced over the menu and I know I'm going to have to come back more than once

~Boudin Balls
~Crawfish Pies
~Fried Pickles
~Shrimp, catfish and oyster poyboys
And definitely the jambalaya. Maybe I'll catch ya'll on a slow day and you'll have a chance to say hello.
