Budapest, Istanbul, Krakow

Heading to Greece for a solo trip in early September. Following a med cruise, I have three extra days to spend before coming back to the states. I have narrowed my search to Budapest, Istanbul, or krakow. Istanbul has the sites like Hagia Sophia, Budapest is quieter and seems very peaceful, krakow has the WWII sites and monuments.
Has anyone been to some or all of these cities and can help me make the decision?

I've been to all three, but it's been since 1992 for Krakow and Budapest. But all three are awesome, and you can't go wrong.
My gut is that there's more to do and see in Budapest and Istanbul than there is in Krakow, so three days in Krakow might be more leisurely than three days in Budapest or Istanbul, where I feel like I would stay very busy trying to see as much as possible.

Those places aren't really close together, so are you taking a flight from Greece to one of those 3 places there and back? Where is your cruise ending and where is your flight out?
Personally I hate flying in the middle of my trip. So I much prefer to stay close to my airport or train/ car around.

When you say solo trip, are you considering nightlife as a factor for your choice? (Are you married?)
Budapest is more of a party town for Europeans with tons of drunk Brits at the clubs, bars, and Ruins Bars. It's a great city, otherwise, with lots to do. I went in March 2023 and have recommendations for sights to see.
Krakow is smaller and has a lot to see and do. Auschwitz is nearby, if you want to see it. My wife and I loved Krakow when we visited in May 2024. (We encountered way fewer drunk Brits than in Budapest.) I have recommendations for Krakow, too. I think I will go back there again. FWIW, the number of beautiful women you see in Krakow is really surprising.
Good luck with your choice and trip.

I’ve done both Istanbul and Budapest in the past two years.
Istanbul is a colorful, vibrant and bustling city. Obviously; you have the mosques which are something to see. Hearing the call to prayer is honestly pretty cool to witness. The palace was not available when I went; but, it’s surely worth a visit. The underground cistern is too. The people are very friendly, the local food is also great. Finding English speakers is a breeze. A quick ferry across the Bosphorous and you are officially in Asia. You can hit two continents in one city.
I stayed at the Blue House Hotel. It’s a modest 3 star type affair; but, puts you within easy walking distance of the major mosques, Roman relics and the bizarre. The staff is super friendly and there’s some great eateries nearby. What you may lack in amenities is more than made up for in access.
Budapest is much more quiet. There are some cool landmarks to see. The Parliament building, Fishermen’s Bastion and the bridges. The nuclear bunker built into the mountain. Food wise; it’s Eastern Europe. Schnitzel, Goulash, Chimney Cakes and a pizza/flatbread like item called Langos. Sort of boring and bland. Not exactly thriving culinary scene. I found that two days in Budapest was plenty, I do worry that if you’re a busy body you might find that 3 days is a bit too much.
I will also point out that Budapest is the only city in Europe that I visited recently where I found pockets of strong anti-American sentiment. Hungary has State controlled media and a pro-Russian leader. Certainly not a major problem; but, it’s always best to be prepared.
Of the two; I’d probably steer you towards Istanbul. Simply because you can come back and do Budapest paired with Prague and/or Vienna very easily. Istanbul is sort of a cool standalone.

Was in Budapest for the 3rd time in late November. Was in Krakow and Warsaw in 2021. Budapest is our 2nd favorite city in the world (next to Prague). So much to see and do. Great food, historic sites. Easy to get around.
Krakow is amazing. Beautiful architecture. Great food and drink. Day trip to Auschwitz.
When in doubt do both!

We sat in mid-plane seats on a flight from Luton Airport to Budapest which had at least one Stag Do Party and Hen Do Party group on the flight.
The beverage service carts (which started at each end of the cabin) were out of alcohol after moving only about 10-15 feet down the aisle.
Many of the partiers were grown men wearing diapers and baby bonnets in 30F weather.

Budapest was a lot of fun. Haven’t been to the other two.

The English are the kind of trashy I like.

I visited Krakow solo at Christmas time in 2018 as a present to myself for graduating LSU. I visited both Auschwitz sites, Shindler’s factory, and an overall tour of the city. I would go back for the Christmas market alone. The pierogies and mulled wine were fantastic.

Budapest was awesome, Hitler didn't bomb it because he loved the city. So much history.

I enjoyed Budapest, but I second the idea of doing it later in combination with Vienna and Prague.
If it were me I’d probably do Istanbul. It’s closer/more in line with where you already are for the rest of the trip and will give you a major airport to fly out of when you’re done.

quote:Generally I agree but if I do have to fly mid-trip, I make it an early morning flight if possible so I can get wherever I’m going and get checked-in.
Personally I hate flying in the middle of my trip. So I much prefer to stay close to my airport or train/ car around.
Sometimes is unavoidable (the only alternative being a long ferry ride, for example).

Thanks for the recommendations, I ended up booking a trip to Istanbul. Might try for a Budapest krakow Christmas market trip in the future

Can't recommend Istanbul enough
Only place like Rome that I've been to where I feel like a week plus is not only justified by should be the minimum goal
We are already going back in early 2026 after going this past fall

This is a dream trip for me, but I am a huge Roman Empire History nerd.
