re: European Flights

Posted by TigersMaul Bammers on 2/2/26 at 11:11 am to
If you have fixed dates and a specific location in Europe as your destination, then Google Flights is the best tool.

If you are not set on dates or destinations and price is a key factor, I recommend signing up for "Going" for a yearly fee (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights) to receive frequent cheap airfare notices.

Going sends you cheap fare email notifications for the US airports you select. It can be more than 1 airport located near you. I get great RT fares out of SEA (e.g., $450 plus seat fees to Gdansk, Poland last year) and have flown out of SFO to Milan for about the same price). Pre-Covid, I flew to LHR for $277 RT and CPH for $470 RT. Some of those flights involved longer layovers.

Going occasionally publishes "mistake fares" for international destinations (e.g., $200 RT to a place in Asia or Europe). But you have to jump on that fare or it is gone in a matter of hours.

8 to 9 months before your international trip is the best window for cheap fares. And the key with using Going for the maximum benefit is being flexible with your dates and destinations.

Good luck.
Another borderline, unheralded female-led 90s band. Massive in the UK, and very underplayed in the US.

Portishead - Glory Box

Maccheroni Republic for good Italian comfort food.

At the risk of offending the obscurity police, this band and its singer wre pretty obscure when I listened to them back in the 90s

The Cardigans - Iron Man
Here's a more obscure '90s L.A. band whose singer recently did soundtrack work on the weird TV series Yellowjackets.

That Dog - Never Say Never
I saw the Spinanes open for Liz Phair in L.A. back in the early 90s. They both sounded great, but Liz Phair seemed to have stage fright.

This is an early 90s indie rock band I always wanted to see live but never could get the timing right. I loved the female singer's voice. They broke up due to heroin issues.

Stayed there for 2 nights just before Thanksgiving last year. Great location and Carousel bar.

Nothing else stood out, but I still enjoyed it.
He still has a lot of energy (and the swagger) considering his age. The Blues Explosion absence was noticeable, but it was still a great show.

I have only been to Corfu on an adult couples trip. Lots of flights there. Sarande, Albania is a short ferry ride away. (We went there first.) Here is what we did on Corfu --

Corfu Town tour, shopping, and dining
Theotaky Estates winery & olive olive oil tour/ tastings
White House dinner (The Durrells in Corfu-related)
Day cruise to Paxos and Antipaxos
Road trip to Kassiopi and Sidari

re: Seattle in December?

My niece came out for a visit the week before Christmas in 2023 and we had sunny/cold weather with lots of fog. You should expect and plan for cloudy & cold or cloudy & rainy, tho.

The Christmas Market at the Seattle Center was OK, but not as cool as the European ones I have seen. $20 just to get in was dumb.

All in all, there are enough cool things to do around here (another example is a Christmas cruise on the Sound or Lake Washington) or within a reasonable driving distance that make a mid- to late-December visit worthwhile.

I watched the Saints beat the Colts in the Super Bowl at this pub. It was the only place in town open that late and showing the game.

Don't know if they televise regular season college games, tho.

Gruzie Restaurant

I have some Vienna recs if you want them.
My wife and I traveled to Vienna and Prague for the Christmas Markets in early December last year. We enjoyed both cities a lot, but I dug Prague a little more because it was easier to see/more compact. Both cities are great - but a little crowded - for Christmas Markets.

On the train from Vienna to Prague, we met an American living in Spain. He was going to Brno with his Polish girlfriend for a more authentic (i.e., less touristy) Christmas Market and holiday experience. You may want to check that out for a day or two.
