Weekly article by Hunt Palmer. Not a ton of surprises here imo. Obligatory PFF sucks. Use it if you want, or don't.

PFF Grades LSU at Arkansas

HIGHEST GRADES

Whit Weeks, LB – 77.3
CJ Daniels, WR – 76.7
Will Campbell, LT – 76.5
Sage Ryan, S – 76.4
Bradyn Swinson, DE – 72.5

LOWEST GRADES

DJ Chester, C – 45.6
Emery Jones, RT – 52.0
Greg Penn, LB – 52.4
Ashton Stamps, CB – 57.3
Josh Williams, RB – 57.4

What is the highest score possible? Hard to image a LB playing any better than he played Saturday.

DJ Chester is fricking killing us man. He needs to seriously step it up going forward

ETA: I don’t usually agree with PFF grades but DJ has been the lowest graded player on the team every week I’ve seen this thread, not to mention the horrible, constant penalties at the worst possible times. I don’t think I’ve seen a center perform worse than him in my time watching LSU

100 is best score possible.
that's doing every single thing exactly right on every single snap you're in the game.

This was noticeable.

LSU is much better on offense when CJ is in the game.

This was noticeable too. I hope they will be ready for aTm.

77.3 is a very high PFF score.

How does PFF know? Are he just assuming what the defensive call is and assuming the player does it right or wrong?

Interesting note from the link:

What also cannot be overlooked is Daniels’s 77.9 run blocking grade. He’s been LSU best blocker on the perimeter all season.

I mean I'm sure there are a few plays in which they don't know exactly what they call is, but the majority of the time, you can mostly know what the basic responsibility of the player is. Grades aren't perfect, they are just an additional data point. If you don't trust it, then ignore it.

You can read exactly how they grade players

Yes. Did he play much after he limped off? I can't remember.

Still think he has a bright future for us and this is part of growing pains as a 1st year starter but yea the penalties absolutely have to stop it’s killing us

I'm not going to even pretend to know how they grade players on snaps that aren't blatantly obvious or away from the play, but they have some method of doing it.

I would guess it's based on things like:
how many times you beat your blocker vs how many times your blocker was able to keep you from impacting a play.
tackles vs missed tackles (maybe even how clean the tackle was vs the carrier getting an extra yard or two after contact)
good vs bad angles when pursuing a ball carrier
how well you did in coverage
probably even factor in technique and fundamentals
etc.

and they do that on every single snap of a game.
get blocked just one time and you're no longer perfect.

it's virtually much impossible to get a perfect score.
so 77 is a really damn good score for someone that plays every defensive snap.

Technically a 100 would be a perfect game but its extremely rare to see guys get over a 90. Joe Burrow had 6 90+ rated games in 2019 as an example of someone who was ELITE ELITE and still only 6 of his 15 games were considered 90+ (and they were all barely over 90).

Weeks got dinged some for his missed tackles (3 of them) against Ark, so that brought his grade down some.

The true mystery is he got a 61.1 pass rush grade when he rushed the passer 6 times, had 4 hurries and 1 sack....so, thats a pretty successful day rushing the passer by definition; not sure what they saw to give him an average grade there Maybe one of his missed tackles came on a pass rush and Taylen got a big gain (dont remember any big gains from Taylen running really though).

Emery Jones has gotten a lot of bad grades this season. How has his draft stock looking?

Is it possible we could get him back for a 4th year?

that's why there must be something else in their system. like maybe technique or something.
to the casual observer like us we think that's absolutely amazing.
PFF somehow breaks it down to the specifics of why he didn't get sacks on all 6 rushes and grades it accordingly.

Emery Jones got worked that game and his frustration showed on a number of plays. Hopefully he can turn it around vs aggie.
