Stop acting like we’re not a democracy, we’re a republic. We’re both.

I see this post constantly. “We’re not a democracy, we’re a republic.”

We are both a representative democracy and a constitutional republic. Both can be true, and both ARE true. It’s like you guys never took social studies or any American history course whatsoever. We just aren’t a direct democracy and to my knowledge, such a thing has never existed on a large scale. Ancient Athens is all I can think of, but that was excluding women and slaves, etc. in a tiny, tiny area. In modern days, the name of the game is a mix between public participation and practical governance.

In a representative democracy, citizens elect officials to make decisions on their behalf, while a republic emphasizes the rule of law and protects individual rights through the Constitution. We are both. These concepts work together to ensure that both majority rule and minority rights are respected. Why this evades so many people on here is beyond me.

It’s just the democrats sure seem to be forcing the direct democracy “mob rule” once they get elected. Many elected officials choose to wipe their arse with the constitutional republic part for the gains of themselves and the power of their party. Benefit of the people be damned

That sounds like a Republic. Thanks for confirming.

This is true. Big difference in the use of the word democracy 50% + 1 vs a Representative Democracy.

I was always taught we were a representative republic, governed by a Constitution.

Democrats want the direct democracy. Get rid of the pesky filibuster. Pack the SCOTUS. They want to squash opposing points of view by labeling it "misinformation." Everything they propose is so they can be the mob and they can rule.

The fact that you don’t realize you described a republic and are using their language suggests you’re brainwashed.

We were not meant to be a mass democracy. Read the federalist papers.

We definitely ARE a mass democracy now. Even the representative constitutional republic aspect of it has been eroded significantly with actions such as the 17th amendment for example.

The founders got it right at the beginning, and we fricked it up. Mass democracy is lunacy.

Neither the Constitution nor Declaration of Independence have the word "democracy " in them.

Republics don't have to be democracies.
