Headed to Portland for 2 nights in a month
Already have a place to stay on the west end.
I appreciate input

Day activities (I’m interested in island trip, whale watching or other unique activity)
Thanks in advance

It’s going to be pretty cold to get on the water in a month.
Restaurant wise…for a smaller city I think it is one of the most underrated food scenes in the country. It all depends on what you want to spend and what you want to eat.
I will say Honey Paw is a must.
If you like beer, the breweries are all amazing and seemingly at every other corner.

Very walkable and enjoyable town with food and drink options galore. We really enjoyed our short time there, but it was in late summer so I dont know about late October.
Holy Donut was a great place on the waterfront in the morning for coffee and ...well you know... donuts.
We were on our way to Acadia NP with kids so we didn't eat anything super fancy just pizza and burgers but you will not have any food problems just depends on what you like

I think Portland has the highest amount of restaurants per capita in the US

Take the ferry to the island. Rent a golf cart.

Lots of food. Standard Bakery is fun breakfast spot.
Portland Head Light is beautiful and historic.
Twin Sister Lights are nice. You can’t get too close to them, but the area is great. There is a lobster restaurant on the water there with picnic tables literally on a lawn overlooking the ocean.

Duckfat and Becky's Diner.

Becky's is a good little diner with local swimming food.

This, the lobster tom yum is amazing. Its next door to Eventide and has the same owner/chef. Eventide gets all the awards and hype and the subsequent lines out the door but I prefer Honey Paw.

The Honey Paw is the only answer here for food.
If you want a drink before hand, we enjoyed Lincoln’s. It’s a speakeasy that’s not too far from Honey Paw

Restaurants: Fore Street, Scales (seafood/oyster/lobster place), Street & Company. Also look at Eventide and Duck Fat for lunch. Second Becky's for breakfast.
Although it's not in the port/downtown area, Allagash brewery is great. If you pay a little money you can get a curated tasting experience.

All of the recommendations in here are great. My hot take is Eventide is overrated and Fore Street, Scales, and Street and Co (all owned by the same company) are better.
If you are able to get a table, Earth in Kennebunkport is amazing.
Isa Bistro is another spot that isn't big on tourists lists because it's in a bit of a shabby neighborhood, but is fantastic.

Highroller Lobster was a cool lunch spot with some different takes on lobster lunch-type dishes
Really good sauces too

Great recommendations
I’m enjoying researching these
Fwiw- fore street and scales have no availability for any of the days I’m there. Now I wanna go really bad

In that case, also look at Central Provisions and Via Vecchia and see if they have availability.

Ok. If you like oysters and steamed clams go by J’s Oysters. It’s on the water and you very well may be the only non-local there.
The other places mentioned are where tourists tell tourists to go.
BTW, oysters generally are not served with cocktail sauce in Maine. It’s vinegar. You will need to ask for cocktail sauce if you want it.

Eventide Oyster Company
Heard good thing about Duckfat but we couldn’t make it.
Flatbread Company was good for what it was.
Breweries are all over and the are all good. It’s a weird town but not a bad stop along the way.

I army at Fore Street just over a year ago. Fantastic meal. We didn't have reservations so we got in line early for daily walk-ups and lucked out.

The ones that I’ve eaten at and wild strongly recommend:
Central provisions—did a chef’s tasting and probably my favorite meal
Eventide
Duckfat (also smaller location at oxbow brewery which is fantastic)
Honey paw—great cocktails too
Street and Co
Mash tun may be my favorite bar
It’s one of my favorite towns
