Caught this as the end of an article on a chef in Washington DC.

Makes me want to try that sandwich now. I remember hearing that place talked about here.

quote:

I asked him for his biggest regret in his tempest-tossed life and he knew immediately. “I had the best po’ boy ever: the surf & turf at Darrell’s in Lake Charles,” he said. “I got the small. But I should’ve gotten the large.”

Would destroy one at any time but it’s definitely overrated

It is good, but in no way would it win any type of award, except from some douchbag writer from DC.

It's not bad, but certainly don't go out of my way to eat any poyboys from Darrel's when I'm in Acadina area. Quite a few better places.

Now....the boiled crawfish from Darrel's in Jennings...that's pretty damn on point.

It's very good. That and the Special are the two best things there. Oh yeah, and don't sleep on the cheese bread with gravy.

I don't think Darrel's is overrated. Those two sandwiches are two of my favorites.

It wouldn’t rank in the top 10 of New Orleans

Somewhere between 11-20

It’s one of the better “takes” on a poboy that’s not at all a New Orleans poboy. I still agree with this, though.

I think it's a killer sandwich. At this point I think the Darryl's is overrated take has jumped the shark and it's now underrated. At least on here.

Somewhere between 11-20 is pretty damn good, considering the abundance of great poboy places in NOLA.

For Lake Charles, it's great to have a place like that.

I had Darrel’s for the first time a few months ago and had the S&T with the spicy mayo. It was good, not great. A little sloppy for me, and the shrimp seemed suspect the whole time I was eating it.

Would go back to try something else, but also wouldn’t cry if I never returned

The shrimp being sautéed instead of fried, grilled is something to get used to.

On a scale from 1-10 its a solid 7. Could be higher if they used better bread like Leidenheimers and a 10 if they offered the shrimp fried.

It just seemed undercooked imo. A weird slimy brownish/clear color

Darrell's poboy is a whole different style than this. It isn't a NOLA poboy. More like a sandwich. The bread they use makes it unique IMO. The texture/sweetness of the bread with the melted cheese is so good.

My go to is the BBQ Beef. The sauce/cheese/bread is perfect

I used to love Darrels. But the last few have had bad gravy and the meat tasted like microwaved deli slices. Just not good. Love the bread though

IMO it's better than the special.
