It’s polls like this that make me skeptical we will solve the entitlement crisis looming in 2033. A majority of *republicans* not only oppose any reforms, but actually want expansions in the programs, without tax increases.

As it stands now, if we are to fix SS by 2033, it will require the largest tax increase in the history of the country, assuming congress kills any attempt at raising retirement age.

Meanwhile, interest on the debt (which we are largely incurring due to ss and Medicare) is now the 2nd largest expenditure.

What a mess.

You are right. In all of these bills passed by Congress, there is very little frivolous spending and pet projects in them. There is absolutely no way to cut spending anywhere else.

Hmmm...so people want a fair share of what they paid in to their entire lives, but receive much less than if they had just invested all that money in the stock market all those years?

Social security is a bad return on investment. They paid into that system their entire life, why should they not get a better benefit?

Well over half of Republicans (56%) would like to see the federal government do more to support the elderly through Medicare health insurance and Social Security benefits, the poll found. Nearly 40% want the federal government to continue with current levels of support for the elderly. Only 7% would like it to do less.

I don't really know what this actually means, outside the fact that so many people are conditioned to just go along when asked whether or not they are "for" some sort of purely generalized aspirational shite like this seemed to be asking.

Sad but true. No one is going to want to be the ones to lose those entitlements though and no politician is going to want to have that hung around their neck. The system is broken beyond repair. We and the people we elect are the problem.

So, quit falling for this government scam. They will spend, spend, spend on everything in sight, except SS and Healthcare, then the government says they are all out of money and the only way to pay for SS is to raise taxes.

Stop supporting the Dems and their spending on BS and we can fund SS properly.

If we abolished welfare and stopped sending money overseas we could handle SS without any problem.

A democracy will continue to exist until the time the voters realize they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.

Or finding a way to let younger voters pay a tax to fund shortcomings and upon reaching a certain age being no longer subject to SS deductions.

SSI has to go away for it to be sustainable. In other words, eat a current tax to pay down liabilities and get out of owing it in the future.

You can fix it on the front end or on the back end.

It's politically untenable to fix it on the front end.

So you fix it on the back end, incognito.

How is that done?

You congressionally appropriate and the Federal Reserve prints. The people pay with inflation.

One way or another, the people will pay.

Why is anyone surprised a majority want the benefits to go up?

SS payments have not kept up with inflation at all the past few years.

I'd imagine retired people that do not have 401s, and there are a lot of them, are pretty boned right now.

Boomer here. 49 years paying into SS. Forty hours a week minimum and any OT I could get. I want what's coming to me. Period. I start drawing in 2 years and I have zero guilt or misgivings considering if I die before I draw a penny, it all goes back to the government. We all know the issues with the SS Fund and how it was raided over the years. IT this point, I can give 2 F--ks about that. Pay me what's mine.

Which makes it weird IMO that the younger generations are who's propping up the Left and its deep-seated belief in big government. I'm a boomer and am all for shrinking social security to the point it can be eliminated but it's younger guys in these threads that are steadfast against it - "only if you give me my money back first!"
