What places are nice or decent? I’m sure Montgomery proper isn’t that great obviously. What are some places within 30 minutes that are decent to nice?

Look at places in Elmore or Autauga Counties. Maybe some of the more rural areas south and east of the city. Although I don’t know much about it, maybe Pike Road?

Avoid Montgomery proper like the plague.

There are nice rural areas north of town.

Just get across a river.

Prattville is nice, Wetumpka is much improved, Millbrook isn't bad. If you don't mind a drive, there's Auburn or for a less crowded and expensive option, there's places around Lake Jordan like Holtville or east of Montgomery like Pike Road and Tallassee.

The Montgomery ghettos still leak trouble in all directions, but it's much better than living in that pit.

I grew up in Matthews, a small, unincorporated community off of Old Pike Road about 20 min outside of the Montgomery, and if you like country living, its great out there. I absolutely did not appreciate it enough growing up, but would be in heaven there now as an adult.

Marler road is nice and pretty with little subdivisions as well.

It was pretty rural back then, and it seems like development has really crept in to the pike road/old pike road area, but I am sure its still pretty nice.

Wetumpka is nice too with some affordable houses. Same with Prattville and Millbrook.

Prattville. Just moved next to the RTJ course. Really nice neighborhood, pretty much anything I want within 5 minutes.

Lots of new construction going on in the area also, saw a couple existing houses pop up, went under contract fast.

Good information here.

What's the story of this place? It seems to have one of the most peculiar set ups of any town I've ever seen, with its quaint little downtown area seemingly completely isolated on one side of the river and basically the entire rest of the town on the other.

How the heck did that come to be?

Depending on traffic, it might actually be a better commute into Montgomery than the Prattville/Millbrook areas. You have to take 65 South into Montgomery from those. Also depends on where the office is. If you're working in downtown Montgomery, definitely look north, but if you're working anywhere else over near Taylor Road, Eastern Blvd etc, driving up from Troy would be faster.

You probably won't get many serious answers here, and prefacing that I live in Birmingham but am in and drive through Montgomery a lot. I could be way off here, but Pike Road seems to be the best area to be in/around. Prattville used to seem that way, but not sure if it still is.
