Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange win $180 million settlement

On May 7, 1984, seven chemical companies, including Dow and Monsanto, agree to pay $180 million to thousands of Vietnam veterans exposed to the chemical herbicide Agent Orange during the war. Lawyers for the two sides announced the surprise out-of-court settlement on the day jury selection was to begin in the case.
U.S. military forces sprayed nearly 20 million gallons of herbicides over Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos from 1961 to 1971 during Operation Ranch Hand, with the aim of destroying forest cover and crops being used by North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. The chemical Agent Orange made up nearly two-thirds of the herbicides used.
Although its active ingredients caused plants to lose their foliage, Agent Orange also included significant amounts of dioxin, a “persistent organic pollutant” which could persist for years in the environment through soil, lake and river sediments, and in the food chain. Dioxin contaminants are linked to long-term health issues including type 2 diabetes, immune system dysfunction, nerve disorders, muscular dysfunction, hormone disruption and heart disease—with even more dire effects for developing fetuses. After the war, returning Vietnam veterans and their families began reporting these issues.
A class-action lawsuit was filed in 1979 on behalf of 2.4 million veterans exposed to Agent Orange, culminating in a surprise settlement five years later, with the seven large chemical companies that manufactured the herbicide agreeing to pay $180 million in compensation to the veterans or their children. Lawyers representing the veterans, in turn, dropped damage claims against these defendant companies.

Just $180M for our veterans for being exposed to a carcinogenic compound that wrecked many of their lives, fricking unbelievable.

Too late to help many. My friend has been dead for years. Another died last year.

Many of our agent orange vets are dead. I have family members who were involved in the agent orange fiasco and they have passed. Many of their complications were directly linked to the chemcial.

Considering the damn paper mill survivors got 104mil this is a travesty of justice.

Father in Law is dying from his exposure while in Vietnam; his limbs completely numb from elbow to hands and mid-thigh to feet. Couple that with mid/nearing late stage dementia, which they said can also be contributed to Agent Orange. VA FINALLY got him on fully disabled vet status about 2 years ago after a multi, multi-years long fight.

Did they settle in 1984 dollar values?

On a related note, does anyone have any information on when payments might be made for the Camp Lejune lawsuits?

My Uncle died a couple of years ago due to that shite

Not just the vets have/had issues, but every plant baw who worked to make the shite was in contact with it to some degree for 12 hours a day for years.

You might want to add a "this day in history" note to your Subject.
Otherwise you are "breaking" 40 year old news

My dad is one of them. He had to "prove" to his own military that he was stationed in Da Nang for 6 months during the agent orange deal, dispite the fact that his military records show that he was. He's getting peanuts for what that shite has done to his health..

My father was an air traffic controller in Vung Tau from like 69-71.
Battled for six years with VA from like 2010-2016 for benefits. In 2016, received backpay from 2010 onward.
He has multiple issues directly correlated from agent orange, including breast cancer and lymphedema. VA hospital in pcola does good enough job with limited red tape.
The price he paid for volunteering for our military, plus my mom’s employment via Worldcom/MCI/Verizon has shaped me greatly in not trusting the govt nor corporate America.

$180 million yeah, glad they* got something for their sacrifice, but that is peanuts.
In 2023 Biden spent $66 Billion on Illegal Immigrants food, housing, schooling, medical care and other services.

Why post this now, it was settled in 1984, that is 40 fricking years ago, doesn't make it less of a travesty, but it was 40 years ago and you are posting it like it was current news, idiot bastard
