Anecdotally as someone who left the UMC, most of the churches they lost were smaller churches that weren't big money printers anyway.
Do you have any statistics to support that?
I know in the Louisiana Conference they lost the largest church in the state ( congregation wise) - St. Timothy in Mandeville.

If you read a Bible to actually understand it you would know that sex is not some taboo. It's actually meant to be enjoyed by a married couple and is the primary reason God gave us women.
Meant to be enjoyed as part of the procreation process, not independently of it. Onan was put to death for pulling out. Genesis 38:9-10.

Catholic priests won't want the competition for the alter boys.

I mean, there are morbidly obese Methodist preachers. They’re just as big of sinners as gay people are.

Methodist church will just become an arm of the democrat party like most black churches.

But the only sins most church goers care about are abortion and being gay. Adultery, gluttony, greed..those don’t count the same. At least that’s my experience. They’ll give you the “we all sin” speech, but they won’t tolerate a gay person or someone who admits to having an abortion in their church (they’ll make them uncomfortable if not outright ask them to leave). Family full of lardasses, unmarried couple who live together, rich a-hole who hordes his money and uses it to buy nice shite he’s very proud of..all welcome.

Don't forget the drunks. Never met a priest who didn't enjoy an alcoholic beverage or 12 on occasion. Cannot imagine Methodist preachers are all that different.
“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18
"Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." Galatians 5:19-21

just curious, that is why I asked - I as well WAS a long time United Methodist that recently left....I have really only kept up with the churches in Louisiana and in Alabama that have left - Alabama had a large number that left the UMC - 547 churches the last I read - and some of those were pretty large ones

Cedar Crest Southern Baptist in West Monroe, La was (on the surface) a great traditional Baptist Church. I went there for a while.
The music dir had an alternate life going on. He was nice guy but something seemed off. He had a son that was a dancer on the short-live Nia Peebles party machine. Ok. He seemed off but was a good cellist in the church orchestra.
One day it was revealed that the music dir was leaving his wife (of 20+ years) and family for some gay hair dresser.
Naturally he had to be fired.
I hope he turned from his homo lifestyle at some point but who knows what happened.

I’ll side with them being the “tare” of the parable.

Because many churches have turned into social groups and don't preach or read the Gospel anymore

The repentant thief showed humility and remorse for his sins. It wasn't simply that the thief chose to "accept Jesus as his savior". He ASKS Jesus to save him.

but it does not say good deeds get you into heaven
If you're doing good deeds for the sake of eternal reward you're obviously missing the mark. But its also pretty clear Jesus wanted us to live a virtuous life. He teaches that by being virtuous we can better avoid sin. He also said in Luke 13 that we all must repent.

Protestants still say you shouldn’t live in sin
Some more so than others.

Remember this guy? He's the antithesis of an Apostle of Christ, but is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.

That movement was getting a lot of momentum with the Methodist Church back in the 1990s. I worked for a lawyer who was on the church’s Supreme Court.
