“Live Comfortably” is kind of a moving target these days but we do well but also stay pretty much within our means too.

In NO or BR a single person could probably get by ok. In the woods, a married couple with one child still under 18 and no mortgage or car payments to worry about can get by just fine. It’s definitely OT poor but it’s definitely nice not having to worry about bills every month.

Your comfortable may be another persons hell. Neither is right or wrong.

I may be doing better than I ever thought I would.
It started by getting a useful degree (CS) and staying employed and well paid now for 30 years. Early fifties. Paid my house off 17 years ago. No car payments. No student loans. No debt of any kind. Our house (3k sq ft, 260k in early 2000s) is nice but reasonable. We bought new cars but they were modest and we drove them a long time.
The last kid just graduated college so we are empty nesters. Wife is semi-retired.
I pretty much don't even look at my account balances anymore. It's not an issue. We are traveling more than we did before and have "upped" our game a bit on dining out, the cars we drive, etc.
Retirement is still something to watch. I *think* I'm doing well but that's hard to predict. Between pension, 401k , roth, and SS we should be fine.

After taxes & insurance, you’ve probably got more like $55k. This leaves $2,200 for housing, all utilities, car, car insurance, etc., on this 50/30/20 formula for “comfortable”. A 700 sf one bedroom apartment is $1250/mo at the complex closest to me. A cheap car would be $400/mo. $200/mo for insurance, which is below the state average. $150 for electric & water. $100 for internet (no clue how much this actually costs when separated from cable). The $2,200 is eaten quickly for a “comfortable” 700 square foot apartment.
I think a couple can live comfortably for less than the doubled $160k, but if you’re single and paying it all, I do think you’d need that much to live what they’re considering comfortably in the article.

I’m 42 and could probably hang it up at 52 if I would quit spending. Knowing me I’ll work till I’m 58 or 62 because I like my toys.

I don't spend a lot, but having 2 kids in my 20s pretty much made a very early retirement impossible. We still have one to put through college.
