Why do some companies still mail out unsolicited thick paper catalogs?

Grainger, U-line, and McMaster-Carr must be keeping the US postal service's lights on. It's not as thick, but BassPro/Cabela's still sends out catalogs too. Who else you got? Do you throw them directly into the trash, or do you use them as a door stop or something else?

Not gonna lie, that Breck’s catalog with their big sales on bulbs and perennials is prime time catalog for me.

fwiw - in many cases, the actual manufacturer of the products pay the Grainger's of the world to be in those catalogs.

U-line
We order Uline stuff online, so why would we want paper catalogs?
Worse are those oddball trade magazines ("Industrial Widget Monthly") that magically appear in my mailbox to bilk advertisers with fake readership numbers.

I have to say I love their print catalog. I find myself browsing through it sometimes and seeing something potentially really useful in the future. If you build stuff or fix things that parts are easy to obtain it is a goldmine. While it is also all on their website as an old head when I am just looking through I prefer that paper.

ULine seems to send a giant one 4 times a year.

Oh you mean the free firestarters?

Those companies don’t really physically have the inventory shown in those catalogs. It’s basically a if you want it we can get it and sell it to you.

13 year-old me would only have rather a Playboy magazine to this one:

Been in the direct mail business for 14 years. Magazines/catalogs generate business for advertisers. They wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work. Pays my employees & me, advertisers turn a profit, vendors get paid and keeps USPS in business. I know, frick a terribly run govt entity but some people rely on them.
It’s called commerce.

Did any of y’all in the 90’s get a Things YouNever Knew Existed catalogue? I would spend hours looking through it.

I got an office supply catalog in the mail and immediately threw it away the other day. I don’t even remember who it was from.

Uline mails me so much shite I don’t even see how they make money on the few things I buy

My wife orders stuff from U-line 1-2x per year. That catalog is like porn for her.
MIL ordered one thing from a place called Hammacher Schlemmer and we still regularly get their catalog. Bunch of cheap Boomer shite similar to The Sharper Image and Skymall back in the day. I flip through for a laugh then give it to my toddler to tear up.
