Dell announces work from home - no promotions

In February Dell introduced a strict return-to-office mandate, with punitive measures for those who want to stay at home.
Under the new policy, staff were told that from May almost all will be classified as either "hybrid," or "remote."
Hybrid workers will be required to come into an "approved" office at least 39 days a quarter — the equivalent of about three days a week, internal documents seen by BI show.
If they want to keep working from home, staff can opt to go fully remote. But that option has a downside: fully remote workers will not be considered for promotion, or be able to change roles.

I know opinions run the spectrum on here but at least Dell actually came out and admitted it.

Kind of makes sense. Promotions=increased amount of responsibility and leadership position
Kind of hard to show you can lead when you're so far from the flagpole.

That's actually a decent compromise if you have no ambitions on moving up the ladder.

Good. Go to work, bums.

This is about control and nothing more. People found ways to waste time in the office, I mean just look at this website for starters. Your top performers will be your top performers regardless.
What was that rant on How I Met Your Mother where the Goliath Bank guy went on and on about how he didn’t want workers to remember they had a life outside their building? Yeah that’s all this is about.

No kidding. Not everyone wants to move to management and have to deal with being over other humans.

Can't wait for all the work from homers to come in this thread at 10 AM on a Tuesday and argue with strangers on the internet for 3 or 4 hours avout how much more productive they are working from home.

They come out looking like a bad guy, but we all know it’s true

I work from the office and work from home the same amount of time. I'm way more productive from home. Less distractions, don't have to deal with morons at the office, don't have to deal with looking presentable and following social norms. To counter GoTigers23's gotcha.. I'm not working today.
Some people are lazy and can't handle working from home without dicking off.

BS. I have been leading for over twenty (20) years, ten (10) years of that in a remote capacity rarely near an organizational flagpole.
I do give Dell credit for at least having a stated policy as so many organizations today would rather walk the line of ambiguity regarding remote workers.

This is dumb. Its just delaying the inventible.
If you want people to come back to the office, make them come back to the office without the option to work remote.
The people that will choose remote will all either leave or be let go soon.
This is just weak corporate leadership.

We used to call that "getting fired" back in the day.

I've worked from home for over 20 years now. This is about control, not productivity. People can easily goof off at the office too, and a good manager knows who is productive and who is not.
Given traffic issues and real estate costs, I would think smart companies figure out which jobs/people can work from home and leverage that.

It takes a really strong, disciplined manager to be effective and work remotely.
On the other hand, Dell is likely losing out on a lot of talent with a blanket policy.

I'm more productive at home for my own stuff, but have seen a marked decrease in training when I train people at home and they are at home.

It's absolutely hard to identify leaders when you only see your work force on Zoom or Teams.
Being able to accomplish your assigned workload doesn't mean you could lead people out of a cardboard box.

I can’t see the benefit of office work for 90% of Dells employees
Sure, let’s get marketing, recruiting, and high level management working in the office but the ground level engineers, helpdesk, and AP/AR teams can be fully remote without issue
Dell’s stock price certainly has not suffered. They are up 289% over the last 5 years

It really depends on your field.
Everyone in my company is remote, including management. The CEO lives in the city of our headquarters, but I doubt that he goes into the office every day. All of the SVPs live away from the headquarters, and travel there when needed.
