In February Dell introduced a strict return-to-office mandate, with punitive measures for those who want to stay at home.

Under the new policy, staff were told that from May almost all will be classified as either "hybrid," or "remote."

Hybrid workers will be required to come into an "approved" office at least 39 days a quarter — the equivalent of about three days a week, internal documents seen by BI show.

If they want to keep working from home, staff can opt to go fully remote. But that option has a downside: fully remote workers will not be considered for promotion, or be able to change roles.

I know opinions run the spectrum on here but at least Dell actually came out and admitted it.

Kind of makes sense. Promotions=increased amount of responsibility and leadership position

Kind of hard to show you can lead when you're so far from the flagpole.

That's actually a decent compromise if you have no ambitions on moving up the ladder.

This is about control and nothing more. People found ways to waste time in the office, I mean just look at this website for starters. Your top performers will be your top performers regardless.

What was that rant on How I Met Your Mother where the Goliath Bank guy went on and on about how he didn’t want workers to remember they had a life outside their building? Yeah that’s all this is about.

Can't wait for all the work from homers to come in this thread at 10 AM on a Tuesday and argue with strangers on the internet for 3 or 4 hours avout how much more productive they are working from home.

I work from the office and work from home the same amount of time. I'm way more productive from home. Less distractions, don't have to deal with morons at the office, don't have to deal with looking presentable and following social norms. To counter GoTigers23's gotcha.. I'm not working today.

Some people are lazy and can't handle working from home without dicking off.

This is dumb. Its just delaying the inventible.

If you want people to come back to the office, make them come back to the office without the option to work remote.

The people that will choose remote will all either leave or be let go soon.

This is just weak corporate leadership.

We used to call that "getting fired" back in the day.

It takes a really strong, disciplined manager to be effective and work remotely.

On the other hand, Dell is likely losing out on a lot of talent with a blanket policy.

I'm more productive at home for my own stuff, but have seen a marked decrease in training when I train people at home and they are at home.

I can’t see the benefit of office work for 90% of Dells employees

Sure, let’s get marketing, recruiting, and high level management working in the office but the ground level engineers, helpdesk, and AP/AR teams can be fully remote without issue

Dell’s stock price certainly has not suffered. They are up 289% over the last 5 years

I firmly believe that WFH during Covid caused a major, unforeseen (by companies) shift in a lot of folks thoughts on corporate work. Working from home made a lot of folks realize that slaving away in a shithole cube surrounded by people you really don't truly like in an attempt to climb the corporate ladder was not all it was cracked up to be. Companies are really pushing return to office now in an attempt to get that leverage of control back.

Not that it matters in this case, but I haven't been a fan of Dell since 2008 when they backordered a laptop I had already paid for and tried to put a 90 day hold on the money I paid them.

That was my first experience with berating a customer service representative and his manager. They released the hold by the end of business that day.

Honestly if you're in a good spot in your career, you make enough money, while having zero desire to move into upper management type roles. That could probably be a really sweet deal.

Smart way to reduce number of employees without announcing a lay off.

The anti-wfh boomers on here want the rest of us to waste our lives commuting like they had to. They should be happy times are changing.

The entire work from home option really depends on your profession.

My entire team is remote, productivity has gone up, and they are based all over the US and Canada.

Obviously the profession matters, but assuming that being in the office equals better productivity is just BS.

The last company that I worked for that tried to eliminate work from home options saw a decrease in morale and a decrease in interest for job positions. Not to mention the amount of people that went somewhere else.

Being in the office is just a backwards way of thinking in the current age of technology that can monitor KPIs, Active Screen time, and more.

Again, depends on the profession, but these companies eliminating the option or putting restrictions in place is just the sign of some VP or Director trying to make their mark with BS policies.
