You think Houston is crowded now, if S La got nuked you might as well call Houston “New Louisiana”

With all of the refineries and Waterford III Nuclear plant, the entire region in SE La is screwed.

Who is going to nuke south Louisiana? I would think California, Washington DC, and NY would be first on the list. I don't believe Fourchon is the number 1 priority in a war.

I'd get on the roof of my building with a drink and maybe something to smoke and wait for the pretty lights

The oil and natural gas infrastructure makes south Louisiana a prime target.

Not just Louisiana but the whole area from Houston to Mobile, but we are the hub,
That would disrupt shipping on the Mississippi, Atchafalaya, and the Tenn-Tom waterway all the way to Minnesota and the Ohio River.

SPR and gulf oil makes us a prime target for the invasion. They can travel up the Mississippi River and split the country.
I think we get spared on the nukes for that reason

Regarding this map - IIRC, the 2,000 warhead scenario (black dots) is meant to represent a nuclear first strike while the 500 warhead scenario (purple triangles) is meant to represent a retaliatory strike under MAD principles.
The idea is that if you’re launching a retaliatory strike, you likely have less warheads available as the first strike would have targeted your nuclear assets. So a retaliatory strike with less warheads is more likely to be targeted at population centers.

i believe that the cancer from the fallout and the cancer from the plants would be in a very very intense competition for mortality rate

It's the lardest export port in the US by far. You want to starve the world, take out the port it all leaves from.

True, taking out NOLA wouldn't effect the military much but it would shut off a huge chunk of the country's logistics and likely cause another 1927 style flood.

I live about 20 miles south of barksdale AFB. I would be toast.
I went to HS about 25 miles west of Barksdale and we had a crazy chemistry teacher that spent a long time teaching us what to if Barksdale got hit. Basically his strategy was to grab canned food, uncarbonated beverages, a gun with ammo, large plastic trash bags...then head to the nearest culvert running north and south, since the blast would be coming from the east. Get in it, cover yourself with the bags, shoot anyone that tried to get in there with you, stay as long as you could with the rations you brought, and always save 1 bullet for yourself if needed.
They don't make teachers like that anymore.

Regardless I hope the thing detonates right over the top of my house. Flash of light and I'm out of here.

fricking up river travel in and out would probably be somewhere on the list though.

Crawfish sizes would be ridiculous in 30 years though so maybe the farmers would go easy on the new inhabitants.
“Expect to pay more for crawfish this year because they’re too big due to nuclear fallout” crawfish farmers say
