quote:

Romeo Chicco struggled to get car insurance in December and was rejected by 7 different insurers.

It turns out GM sold the driving history from his 2021 Cadillac to Lexis Nexus which then provided that data to insurance companies for risk assessment.

He is now suing both.

Something needs to be done with these tech companies buying and selling data. Extremely difficult for me to believe this isn't being used as an end around the 4th Amendment.

I had a Silverado a few years ago (did not subscribe to Onstar) and was switching my insurance to Progressive. During the call, the rep asked if I wanted to do Snapshot then quickly said "Nevermind, we already have your driving data". Current truck I removed the cellular modem since I wasn't doing the subscription stuff anyway.

Should change your title. He sued Lexis Nexus, a data company. Not Lexus.

I just had to opt out on my wife's new car. Who knows how much that would have increased our insurance, but I bet it would be a ton.

Flordia man needed this link LINK

Every manufacture has one, just google "opt out sharing data and your car brand"

You can actually opt out of this. When doing your Onstar tell them you want to opt out of reporting to insurance. When the dealership pre-registers your Onstar while you're signing paperwork they have the option to opt out then. They just usually and lazily accept everything to get it done.

My GMC Sierra every other startup the Onstar lady voice tells me I’m not connected to Onstar Services. Had it the first three years when it was included free at truck purchase, the maintenance reports were interesting but nothing I’d pay for.

The Euro’s are cracking down on unfettered consumer data collection. We need to do the same. “Trust Us” is far beyond its sell by date.

Google…quit showing me search results you think I’d like based on your cross platform tracking me, and just give the most significant ones for the topic. You were great when the discontinued Advanced Search feature used Boolean Operators.

It's probably time to go back to a flip phone, quit the Internet, and drive a vehicle from 2003.

This should be good. I anticipate a big dog and pony show and a settlement that gets passed on to policy holders and nothing changes. Lobbyist are licking their lips right now.

Hate to tell y’all this, but this happens when you get your vehicle serviced or repaired also. Information gets sent to your insurance company about mileage definitely and I’m pretty sure repairs done.
