I just want to note that after the first game I posted this thread:
After watching men’s basketball tonight they look like a middle of the pack SEC team.
And you replied:

I agree, middle of the pack SEC team, likely competing for an NIT spot.
And here we are.

Madking spent all of 2022 and most of 2023 shitting on Jay Johnson as well.
That should tell you all you need to know.

All I’m going to say is, his team has won these last 2 games against better talent.
I don't think South Carolina is a more "talented" team. LSU has some guys who can play. This isn't the little sisters of the poor. But winning on the road in conference is always tough and always an accomplishment. Kentucky, on the other hand, definitely has more talent man for man, and LSU found a way just to be tougher than them last night. Except for the final 2:00 of the first half (where McMahon put in a really curious line up) and the first minute of the 2nd half where LSU looked tired, LSU brought the fight to UK most of the night.
It would have been a shame to see LSU not get the result last night. Particularly when you consider 2 points were retroactively taken off the board. But for the first time in the McMahon tenure you are starting to feel a little bit of a belief. He'll have to sustain success to keep that fire burning. But that fire has to start somewhere, and hopefully it did on Saturday vs. USC and continued last night.

Hey Alt, still think Reed hasn't shown improvement since he got to campus? Or do you really never watch the games?

Madcow has a very appropriate name. He literally hates every coach at LSU.

They'll back as soon as he loses a game. Can't keep the miserable away for long.

Good post. Absolutely accurate — we do not have a Dillingham/Reeves/Thiero on the team.
Ball was bound to bounce our way in a big game this year at some point… we been knocking on the door all year & were way overdue for some good karma.
What’s more important is the fact the young guys are developing and the transfers are figuring out how to play complementary basketball / doing a great job of self scouting, despite no Jalen Cook.
I have no doubt at this point we have ourselves a coach.

He did a great job finishing around the rim. But he was always able to do that. Even last year. It was the consistency and diversity of his game that hadn't really improved since last season. But in these last two games you've seen him play with confidence. Seen him drive with a purpose and not a guy who starts to drive without much of a plan of attack. Going into the last two games the numbers from last year and this year were virtually the same. That's not my opinion. It's raw data. Before the game vs. South Carolina he had scored in double-figures in SEC place once all season.
The last two games don't suddenly change what happened before them. But what you might be seeing is a guy who is now starting to figure things out. A guy who is starting to understand what kind of player he is and what he can do. So no, I don't think he had improved a ton before these last two games. But you very well could be seeing the start of that big jump he's always had the potential to take. Hopefully you are because he may have the most potential of any player on the whole team.

Alt has had some takes I’ve disagreed with, but he’s no Madking. It’s one thing to be skeptical or to defend WW.
It’s another thing entirely to pose as some basketball expert while giving shite takes & relentlessly dumping on your team while the program is obviously (to anyone paying attention) picking itself up.

Reed has been very improved in showing patience around the rim. The stats might not have bore it out, but he has looked better in most phases before this game. I think he was held back by him and Baker learning to share space on the floor early in the season.

I said this after the first game and still stand by it:
quote:
Reed has the highest ceiling on the team, he just needs to grow into his role. These two are surrounded by what appears to be decent role players. IMO this team goes were Baker and Reed take them. These two have to stay healthy.

if this was in response to me, i was not implying the close losses were wasted games.....simply stated that moral victories are not what a program is built on...and then i stated that these 2 wins along with the way we've played is an improvement. and we both agree, all things taken into consideration, positive momentum for building the program up. and most of my rant was directed at the "so what, we don't have tGeneral" crowd, who can't seem to enjoy a good win for a young coach rebuilding our program. support the team, regardless of which coach you're in love with.

The jury is still out on McMahon as a good coach in the SEC but the "defense" finally presented some evidence. As I've been saying for weeks, to be considered a good coach you have to pull some upsets. Until the last 2 games in 50+ games during the McMahon tenure, LSU really hadn't pulled one despite being underdog in the majority of them (thus chances to pull upsets). Beating two top 20 teams in a week is a huge step forward. Having said that, I think it is becoming evident that Kentucky has been overrated. Proof of that is having lost 3 straight games at home for the first time since Calipari has been there (yes, I know this game was at LSU).
As far as Wade goes, I have never been a disciple and once again say, he better win the conference tournament because his schedule is dog shite. I have never doubted the LSU players' efforts. 2 things need to be improved dramatically before I start contributing to a McMahon statue. 1) is it possible to not get blown out in the first half against a good team and have to come back from 15 points down every time to try to win it. 2) recruit a lot better. Ward is by far the highest ranked player signed on the current roster (using Baker and Collins transfer assessments). McMahon needs to have a breakthrough/game changing recruit and really hasn't gotten that consistent go to guy.

I said the same thing about Reed up until the last 2 games. It was not unwarranted. But some players take longer than others. Eeed has definitely improved the last 2 games. Hopefully that will continue because if he becomes a consistent threat that only opens up the offense for us. He was way more physical last 2 games. He was in the paint competing the last few games. And he was stronger going to the rim. He and Ward have made huge jumps the last few games. Hoping it continues.

If you can’t give a coach a few years after taking over a team that’s roster was decimated, you are either an idiot or a miserable person.
