From Cajun Grocer.com
Cliffs and mentioned phrases were..

"Saltwater intrusion"
"Drought conditions"
Basically saying a shorter season and won't be able to ship live until April.
I'm curious if anyone has any sort of evidence of saltwater creeping it's way north of I-10 into Eunice or Crowley. If so, please feel free to reply. Jesus, what a pathetic excuse.

Had a farmer tell me the salt gets in their eyes and they don’t want to have sex.

It doesn't matter what people who actually know say, you idiots won't believe it and will just blame it on crawfish farmers price gauging. Then, someone will come along and say that prices go up every year.

Wash, rinse, repeat......for every single crawfish thread.

So it’s what, 5 lbs to 1 peeled lbs at the store, something along those lines. Why is my local grocery store able to sale local, from Mamou crawfish for $9.99 peeled, but $9.99 a lbs with the shell, live?

Saltwater definitely didn’t get north of I10. Most if not all farms north of I10 use deep water wells. Water straight from the water table. Farms south of I10 use more surface water (water from bayous) that’s where the saltwater intrusion happened.

Just buy the Chinese shite. If enough people just do this, the local industry will learn.

Everyone in vermilion parish who didn’t have a deep well couldn’t pump fro July - Dec
In southern Acadia and Jeff Davis the salt got high from Oct - Dec

So it’s estimated that 100k acres will have hardly any production this year
There is a guy in vermilion parish who has deep wells who is pulling is traps on 800ac right now to plant rice because his catch was so bad

Had a family get together last weekend and Good Friday came up. Someone asked if I was doing crawfish and my answer was hell no that shite is too expensive. The response why are you broke? I automatically assumed they are retarded.

If they aren't shipping until late April then something is definitely wrong and story has merit.

No way anyone is going to be sitting on live crawfish they can ship.

I personally witnessed an exchange of crawfish for cash yesterday just south of Eunice. Two sacks, $7.50/lb… $510 cash handed over. I was told by the farmer they are catching crawfish at a rate they normally would in December. Shells are softer than normal as well.

The beginning of the season saw low water levels in the Basin. Since then the Miss River has raised to Action Level (stage below Flood Stage). By law 30% of the flow at Old River is diverted to the Basin so there is ample water in the Basin for crawfish. FTR the Miss River was 2' lower than present this time last year.

The big issue however is how many crawfish died in the mudholes during the drought this past summer/fall. That is where the damage was done.

FWIW, my BIL who fishes quit running his traps for the next couple weeks because he was seeing a lot of crawfish with eggs so he figures to let them drop them.

The drought affected everyone. I know plenty of guys in St. Landry that aren't catching shite because most of the crawfish in their fields basically cooked in the ground last summer.

It's amazing how some of you seemingly can't live without mudbugs with as much as ya'll bitch about the prices...

We had record heat and record drought. It’s kinda normal that a creature in that environment would be negatively impacted

they always have excuses every single year no matter if it's legit or not legit (with NOT legit mostly being the case).

they want it to be a "bad" year, then the public should make it a bad year and not buy anything. of course that won't happen because there are still enough stupid people who will always pay outrageous prices, but it would be nice if people would give them what they want.
