re: Does a toilet go bad?

A buddy of mine who is a plumber told me to squirt a good bit of dishwashing liquid into the bowl and then add a good bit of toilet paper and flush it. Sure enough it flushed perfectly and he told me the bowl probably developed a tiny hairline crack and that was not allowing it to flush properly. The thing is, it didn't show signs of any leakage.
I changed out the toilet and problem solved.
This is a great scenario to cause poor flushing action when the tank is collecting sufficient water and there is nothing else obstructing the flow from the tank foot valve. The toilet works on siphon so any leak in the outlet pipe withing the bowl mold will cause poor siphoning. There is also an air space on this line as well which would explain why it didn't visibly leak water.

Yes. Obviously, the guts in the tank don't last. But the tiny holes around the bowl that let water into the bowl can get build up that makes the bowl fill up slower. This causes it to flush slower. This generally takes something like 20+ years and is affected by how hard your water is. I have owned rent houses for many years. I prefer to replace the toilet over trying the clean the little holes.

Over long enough time frames the glaze on the porcelain can get degraded by cleaners and then start accumulating scale inside. This can make the toilet performance a little worse. The bigger issue is that if your toilets were cheap ones that came with your house, if they are the older low flow models, or if they have 2 buttons then they suck. Spend a couple hundred on a new one with upgraded larger bore internals (American Standard cadet 3 is an inexpensive option) and the difference is huge in how fast and strong it flushes.

In my experience once the guts need replacing, might was well buy a new toilet (esp if you have an older toilet). $250 gets you a new Kohler Highline or Cimmaron (both have the same canister flush design that is 1000x better than old toilets). They’re fairly simple to install yourself.

The toilet is a porcelain object. It cannot wear out or go bad unless it cracks. All of the added seals and moving parts can be easily replaced.

Is your wife mechanically inclined? If not, don't listen. To answer your question, barring cracked porcelain, it should be fine. You need to change out the guts every now and then

I hate slow flushing toilets. One time in a hotel it took so long to flush it was like watching my turds circle the bowl for like minutes before they’d finally go down. Highly irritating.

They don't go bad, but I will attest that they can be destroyed.

My American Standard Cadet 3 has 2 buttons

As others have indicated the insides do go bad, but one thing that requires a good flush & drain is air. That's why houses are built with stacks, they do get clogged, and need cleaning periodically.
Improperly working stacks can & will compromise the entire plumbing system.

Wife should lose weight and stop taking massive dumps.

The toilet itself doesn't go bad, the parts inside can and will go bad.
Get a kit from home Depot and replace the guts in the tank.
This. Always start with this.
And it's easy enough that even your wife should be able to replace it.

This made me think of "The Death of Eric Cartman". Top 10 episode.

Pop the top off of the fill valve, pull out round gasket inside of it, check if it is worn or has holes are tears in it, if it looks good, rinse the gasket, and set aside. Take a cup and hold it over the top of the valve (upside down), flush the toilet a time or two (water will spray out of the top of the fill valve), replace gasket, and put the top of the valve back on.
Check the flapper valve and see how deteriorated it is. See if it moves up and down freely. The flapper is an easier swap than the fill valve. Start with it if it looks rough (it probably does).

Mine did. It started with ditching class and smoking cigarettes in the alley behind the school. Then it escalated to pot and outright truancy. Before we knew it, our toilet was dealing and committing armed robbery. I know I have to take responsibility for failing my toilet, but the system failed it too.
dammit i opened this thread just to make this joke.

The new fluid master water control devices in the tank suck in comparison to the older designs.

I don't know about going bad, but those old style toilets where the water rises all the way to the rim before flushing down make me nervous as hell.
