LSU WB’s Croatia/Greek trip. What’s the point?

Let’s really talk about this trip:
The cost for 20+ players, coaches, support staff has to exceed $350,000
What is the actual point of this trip?
1) the coaches will claim giving their players exposure to other cultures and to see some places that they have never seen. I call BS on this. When you see photos of any of these players on excursions at bowl games you see them with their headphones on and appearing completely uninterested. So spare me that the players will get a cultural experience. Most could give a flying frick.
2) these players already get treated like queens in this case. How much more do you have to give them? Now it’s free trips to Europe? What about the regular students that have to pay their way for a European exchange program?
And you’ can’t say that trips like this make money for the university. we just saw the numbers and this team operates at a deficit.
So the question becomes:
What does LSU get out of this?
International exposure? Attracting young Croatians and Greeks to campus?
At some point trips like this need to be called out.

Recruiting trip, clearly. The best of basketball has come from Croatia, Slovenia and that region of the world.

Comments like this are one reason LSU is perceived as poor.
You don’t think LSU can afford to reward a program that’s a top 10 program in the country with a little trip and probably get some good game time in for the players in the process.
Also, if you’re believing that report that LSU athletics is losing money well that’s just obtuse.

Helps build team relationships and trust. More a team is like a family the better.

Its not your money so why do you give a shite

I’d be fine with it if coach and players were to use their salary and NIL to fund a team trip and LSU gives them credit hours. But I don’t see why fans or LSU should fund a vacation for a group that collectively pulls in 7 figures a year.

Let the players go and a few coaches
I don't see any reason to send 12 coaches/support staff or they make enough money to pay their own way
On top of that they want donations:
Fans can make donations to the LSU Women’s Basketball Excellence Fund for the trip and there will be a LSU Fan Package for those wishing to join the Tigers in Europe, available mid-February

LSU athletics spends what they have and this is one way to do it. Take these kind of trips. Bring an entourage. Wear the colors, give LSU pub and live it up.

Recruiting and brand exposure, so basically marketing that is paid for via the expense of the trip.
To be a top program you have to show recruits the benefit of playing for LSU. This is a huge recruiting tool.

Thanks for starting this thread and bringing this foreign trip to my attention.
I just read all about the trip on LSUSports.net and saw that this is a "learning abroad" program where the players earn credit hours for going on the trip. Also, fans are invited to help cover the cost for the trip via a TAF dedicated fund for women's basketball. There's a link in the article.
I just donated $100. Bon voyage, ladies!!

scenic usage in HBO’s Game Of Thrones.
Learning trip, really!
Maybe do it when you aren't running a deficit

LSU athletics doesn’t lose money as a whole but WBB definitely loses money . As matter of fact Football is the only program that makes money besides men’s basketball turning a small profit.

This is incredibly dumb and shortsighted. Why do you care where they go and what they do? Vacation or not, it’s a great experience for the kids, it’s going to help in recruiting, it’s great marketing for LSU.
