Gov Landry approves 2 Black CD's, destroys BR Representation

This new CD map for Louisiana sucks massive ballz
This Governor is obviously not a fighter. Texas fought in court 6-7 times to get barely decent maps/districts approved.
But they DID fight.
Garret Graves is a POS. But this screws over the People more than a man who will continue living a rich-mans life as a lobbyist or something

— Earlier this week, Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) signed a new House map that creates a second Black-majority seat in the state.
— The new district, stretching from Baton Rouge to Shreveport, would have favored Joe Biden by 20 points in 2020 and is Safe Democratic.
— Former Rep. Cleo Fields (D) seems to be a frontrunner for the new seat, and, if elected, would return to Congress after a nearly 30 year absence.
— Aside from its partisan implications, the new map could be interpreted as Landry’s attempt at punishing Rep. Garret Graves (R, LA-6).

How bad could this screw Higgins? St. Landry and a part of Lafayette are now in the 6th as well

I just don’t understand the point in punishing Graves like this. Doesn’t make much sense to me.

52.2 vs 45.7 puts that in range for a strong republican candidate, no?

2 and 6 are gerrymandered AF.

If it’s Fields vs Graves, that will be a Baton Rouge based district.

They have to be majority black. Not easy to do that without gerrymandering. Neither New Orleans nor Baton Rouge is big enough or black enough by themselves.

How do you get a CD with 50%+1 black people in this state without including NOLA and the river parishes, which are already a different one?
If you have to do a second excluding those areas, you have to pull portions of at least two metro areas, if not three, and avoid a lot of white areas.
Cleo’s previous district was a Z from Shreveport to Monroe to Baker almost to Bogalusa.
With BR being as populous as it is and the city limits being over 50% black, it tends to be the starting point for any attempt to do a second one.
Short version - they are forced to do this by the courts and this is the least godawful way to do it given political realities in the state.

And thus the problem. LA’s population has been fairly stagnant since the 80s while the rest of the nation has grown. Combine that with Katrina and you no longer have a CD comprised solely of Orleans Parish for one of these districts.

But gerrymandering for elephants is bad

I disagree (would have preferred they fight), but I understand Landry's take. If you are going to lose, at least get in the good graces of Cleo, who can have a lot of pull come election time. Plus, it screws over an enemy and potential rival, so that's nice too.

The problem with the fight is that the judge will impose their own districts going into 2024.
Getting Cleo his own district beats pissing off Johnson and Scalise, two of the most powerful members of Congress, because their own districts got fricked with.

It doesn't matter to some of these people. They are just looking to bash Landry. Let them keep showing their ignorance.

Standby, panties out of your butt cracks...
This is a strategy, they are betting that the districts will get shot down. Its a bit of a risky move, but at least 2 lawsuits are in the works to contest the new district map. I hate the way they play these games, but it is what it is currently.

2 white guys might get elected. Also Cleo likes Baton Rouge.

At the least this is a holding action for 2024…
Give Cleo a seat, let Graves take the hit, hope this insanity gets overruled.
This beats having the courts decide to frick the Speaker of the House and several other members with imposing their own map.
