Amazon-owned Ring will stop allowing police departments to request doorbell camera footage from users, marking an end to a feature that has drawn criticism from privacy advocates.
In a blog post on Wednesday, Ring said it will sunset the “Request for Assistance” tool, which allows police departments and other public safety agencies to request and receive video captured by the doorbell cameras through Ring’s Neighbors app.
The company did not provide a reason for the change, which will be effective starting this week.

The update is the latest restriction Ring has made to police activity on the Neighbors app following concerns raised by privacy watchdogs about the company’s relationship with police departments across the country.
Critics have stressed the proliferation of these relationships – and users’ ability to report what they see as suspicious behavior - can change neighborhoods into a place of constant surveillance and lead to more instances of racial profiling.
In a bid to increase transparency, Ring changed its policy in 2021 to make police requests publicly visible through its Neighbors app. Previously, law enforcement agencies were able to send Ring owners who lived near an area of an active investigation private emails requesting video footage.

In mid-2022, Ring disclosed it handed over 11 videos to police without notifying users that year due to “exigent or emergency” circumstances, one of the categories that allow it to share videos without permission from owners. However, Guariglia, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said the group remains skeptical about the ability of police and the company to determine what is or is not an emergency.
Last summer, Ring agreed to pay $5.8 million to settle with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations that the company let employees and contractors access user videos. Furthermore, the agency said Ring had inadequate security practices, which allowed hackers to control consumer accounts and cameras. The company disagrees with those claims.

Ring cameras are racist

Racist cameras only catch black people committing crimes! Ring needs to adjust the code so that they catch white people committing crimes too

Which is weird, because security commercials have shown me that 100% of burglars are white men

Eh I'm fine with this. Police can still ask individuals or do actual work and get a warrant.

I get this. Its actually kind of fricked up that the cops can request video from people's ring without them knowing.
But the race part. Is it racist to look at a video and assume someone is a certain race just because you see them on the video?

I posted a video of a porch pirate stealing a package
EBR sheriff knocked on my door, told me they knew the guy and asked that I file a report and share the video with them.
Three days later they called me saying the guy was arrested
I was surprised and very happy with how EBR Sheriff handled it

It should work just like any security camera. Request video from property owner or get a warrant

So you didn't even contact them? That's actually impressive. Well, I never really dealt with the EBR Sheriff so I don't know how they operate, but either way frick the thief.

So now instead of definitively knowing if it was a black person we’ll all just assume it was. That’s how you stop profiling.

I did not contact them. Figured it was a porch pirate and not worth the effort. I posted to the ring neighbors app, EBRSO saw it and knocked on my door

So now they’ll just have to take a few more steps to get a search warrant

Good, get a warrant.

Not exactly related, but my security camera caught a car wreck in front of my house. The driver came to me and asked if I had footage of the wreck. I was trying to be nice and showed her the footage since the wreck was not her fault. Next thing I know I get a knock on my door with a sheriff’s deputy and summons to appear in court with the footage!!!
Never again will I get involved!!
