Do they still sell naked lady watches?
13 means he is hitting puberty and that will be most appreciated.
Erotic watches have been a thing for well over a century. Blancpain and others still make them. They are actually animated.
I hope I don't get banned for these, but getting banned for posting six figure watches would have to be a first and I figure apropos for the Obtuse1.

Some of those Swatch x Blancpain collaborations are pretty slick. It makes me irrationally angry I can't just buy them online at MSRP from a legitimate store.

He won’t like it if it isn’t an Apple Watch. He couldn’t care less about a watch it’s the smart features he wants. Get him something else all together if you don’t want to get him an Apple Watch.
OP should “already knowed” this.
Behave otherwise as a parent of a 13 year-old at your own peril.

Yeah. G-Shock. If your kid loses or destroys a G-Shock, he’s not ready for a better watch.

If you are trying to foster his iterest in watches, I would go with some iteration of the Casio MDV106. It's analog, 200 M water resistance and quartz, so can be beat up without affecting performance. One variant of it is pictured above. I think that is a perfect intro and if watches aren't his bag as a hobby, he still has a useful item that will last a good long time.

If he’s interested in watches and wants something mechanical and not a POS Casio, Hamilton is the best bang for the buck in the Swiss watch world. You can get a classic field watch, diver, etc that fit/finish/movement can go toe to toe with brands 10x its price for $200-400. They were the official watch of the Army, Navy, Marines etc and you can actually see the coaches wearing them in the Army/Navy game. They are also the most used watch in Hollywood movies and always do special editions for them (which can get pricier like their best selling Jack Ryan watch), but if your kid is into any of those movies he’ll get a kick out of it.

Vincero … couple $100 and you can even have it engraved for him.

I got this one for my 14 year old who asked for his first watch. He wanted what he called a dress watch, but I didn't want to get him one with a dress watch band.

He doesn't want an Apple Watch to tell time. He wants it to communicate with his friends.

Fossil Watches are dependable and great price.

does ironman measure distance ran? (not just steps)

If you aren't willing to buy an Apple watch, just don't buy him a watch. He doesn't want a watch. He wants an Aople device to wear on his wrist. Just like all of his friends have.

I know I'm late to the show, but I echo what Obtuse said and would get him the Casio MDV-10. There are several options to choose from (Batman, Pepsi, steel bracelet, rubber strap). Look on Ebay. If he doesn't want a traditional analog watch, there are plenty of Casio digital models out there.
Also, if you want to get him an automatic, look at the Seiko Sports on Amazon. They make some field watches in the 36mm-38mm range that would be good.

I've been wearing Timex Ironmans for 30 years. I only replace them when they get really banged-up AND either the strap breaks or the battery finally craps out. Great watches.
