Glad the rangers weren’t serious about Ohtani or maybe just couldn’t afford him.
They haven’t had good luck with massive contracts and that is a silly number.

I thought California had strict laws on length of contracts...

The Chiefs can keep Mahomes. The Bucks can keep Giannis. The Royals and Brewers will never replicate that and I think that’s an issue for the league as a whole.
This is 100% truth. And that is why teams like the Padres, Mariners, and Brewers are signing promising players like Tatis Jr, Rodriguez, and the Brewers top prospect to riskier deals long before they hit free agency.

These contracts are dumb. He won’t be worth that for more than 4 years.

Fun fact. Shohei will make more next season than the 2023 opening day payrolls of the Baltimore Orioles ($60.7M) and the Oakland A's ($56.9M)
Not true. His AAV is $70 million a year, yes. But supposedly the majority of it is deferred. Meaning over $350 million will be paid to him after the 10 years. This was his idea so the Dodger l’s wouldn’t be financially hamstrung because of his annual salary. He will be making $35 million next year at most, leaving them room to make more moves.

Sports in general need to ban this type of contract. You want to sign him for 10 years/700m, then you're going to pay him 700m over 10 years.
At least the competitive balance threshold uses AAV.

MLB absolutely needs at least a minimum payroll requirement. But the owners won't ever agree to that, much like the players will never agree to a salary cap.
The real question is did the Dodgers get insurance for his contract? With a second TJS I highly doubt he will still be a starting pitcher in 10 years.

If Shoehi Otani is worth $700 million in today’s market, what would be the going rate for Willie Mays?
No, Willie was not a two-way player … although I am beginning to have my doubts that Ohtani will be long term given his arm troubles … but IMO he’s the greatest position player who ever lived and could beat you every other way except on the mound, bat, glove, feet and arm, and in his prime was a perfect 10.0 in every tool.
