And you are thinking micro, very little picture if you don’t think the Dodgers will easily recoup that $700 million investment

Anyone who thinks they are recouping $700 MIL needs to take a basic economics class. It ain't happening.

And you don't have to think micro to see that. It's just common sense.

Almost all of these long term contracts are never worth it for the team. Anything more than 4-5 years is just dumb… the second half of this 10-year contract will be a disaster for the Dodgers.

You are looking at this from a very short-term perspective like a fan or even a GM who needs immediate ROIs in the form of wins/championships. $700 million investments are done by huge money players on a world stage that we have no true concept of.

Figured he'd get between $500-600 million, but $700 million? Woah.

If Dodgers win the World Series it be all worth it. I’m rooting for Ohtani to win one. Because he surely won’t win with the Angels.

He is going to print money for the Dodgers. He will make them that money back and more through merchandise, ticket sales, etc

250 per ticket for the worst seats available, and they still can win it all.

Why the hell would an all star player go to a small market when an LA or New York team can just pay them with the same amount as the entire roster of a small market team

Other than a BS 2020 season that doesn’t count, when’s the last time a team from NY or LA won a World Series?

It’s been 15 years since one of these markets has won the World Series regardless of the massive amount of money they spend.

I think we’re past the point of whining about all the big money players on one or two squads. They still have to win it on the field and it’s clear that buying a WS isn’t as easy as fans make it out to be.

ETA: I completely misread your post. I’m gonna keep this here anyway because frick the Dodgers and their fake WS win.

The Dodgers have underachieved worse than the Braves the last 3 years.

How did the merchandise and ticket sales work for the angels?

Dodgers are already 1/2 in the league annually when it comes to merchandise and ticket sales

You don’t think the Yankees are still seeing returns on their Babe Ruth investment over 100 years after they got him from the Red Sox? The best selling pair of shoes in the world every year are $150 Jordans, and he hasn’t taken an NBA shot in 20 years.

Think of how huge the last few American sports tv many deals have been. Now think of how many people live in Asia. What sort of tv deal deal do you think the Dodger’s group is about to be able to leverage? I said “jerseys and hats” as kind of a joke. It’s WAY bigger than that. Bigger than we can even comprehend.

You know there’s quite the difference between the Angels brand and the Dodgers brands.
