Is the Sugar Bowl struggling?
Posted on 12/6/23 at 9:14 am

I saw a commercial the other day that was basically begging people to help support the sugar bowl.
I usually go every year and when it’s not a playoff game there are literally entire sections in the upper deck empty.
I know the concert they put on this year didn’t even sell out either

Since it is one of the semi-finals this year, it will probably sell out. I believe they are struggling in the off years.

I would go this year just as a college football fan if the tickets come down some.

There is always a push to get people there. They have a dedicated committee and all. That really isn’t abnormal.

i wish i could struggle like this
quote:
sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley’s compensation jumped to $869,000 in 2020 from $711,000 in 2019 after he was promoted to CEO in the middle of 2019, which accounts for his smaller pay that year. Hundley’s compensation also stayed about the same in 2021 - $865,000, similar to what the Sugar Bowl paid his predecessor in 2017 and 2018. Records show his organization got $330,800 in federal payroll relief in 2020 to help pay for 13 employees as revenue for the Sugar Bowl organization dropped from $16.6 million in 2019-20 to $10.8 million in 2020-21.

Let’s be honest here, it’s struggling because of the cesspool that it’s located in.

It’s doing fine for now, but there needs to be significant investment if the Sugar Bowl wants to compete for CFP games going forward.

I think the BCS bowls are the ones that got fricked over most in the playoff format. Yes you get the semifinal but nobody cares in the "off" years when in the past those were probably guarenteed sellouts every year.

The Rose Bowl game sells-out every year. The Sugar Bowl is always a let down, even though it typically features better teams. The Rose Bowl game starts in daylight and ends in darkness. Indoor venues just don’t have the same allure.

They should be fine as of next year. It’ll be a playoff game every year.
It’ll be interesting seeing the NY6 bowls fight to keep those games since everyone else will want to move the quarterfinals to campus.

Bowl games in general have struggled for the last 20+ years. The BCS hurt all the good bowl games that weren't the top 4 (peach, cotton, capital one), the playoff hurt the 4 bcs games that aren't in the playoffs each year.
Next year the good ones should start getting more traveling fans for the larger playoffs, but we will have to see how well fans travel for a first round playoff matchup if they need to save up for later rounds. And I would think all the bowls that aren't in the playoffs are going to start hurting even more.

Every bowl looks like that now… if players don’t care why should fans?

This is part of the issue with taking the local ties out of a bowl.
SB did well for decades because having a SEC team as an anchor meant people in the area who would travel and attend.
Best attendances in the past 30 years tended to be title games and whenever LSU was playing. Other close teams like Ole Miss and Arky drew well too.
Worst non-Covid attendance tended to happen when schools from long distance came to play and there wasn’t much local interest. (Oklahoma-Auburn in 2017, Louisville-Florida in 2013, Georgia-Baylor in 2020)
There is only so much you can do when they aren’t a playoff bowl, as you tend to get fanbases who are very disappointed they aren’t getting a shot at a title (Ex - Alabama playing K State in December 2022).
Any bowl is going to be boom-bust to a degree but the SB sure seems to be taking some hits between top flight SEC teams not appearing and some notoriously poor traveling fanbases appearing.
Baylor, for example, used to be joked about as going to games with the Ten Commandments and a $100 bill and not breaking either during the trip.

It is actually incredible how many different things are contributing to the eventual collapse of college football. And people telling me, "The numbers have never been better," were also talking about the great housing market in 2008.
NIL making mercenaries
Playoffs ruining bowls
Conference realignment slowly killing tradition/rivalries
It's gonna be sweet watching NFL 0.5 in 20 years and wondering what happened to the glorious sport of college football.

Couple things, NOLA is a fricking crime-ridden shithole and not worth really going. And since the inception of this dumbass playoff we’ve got, nobody gives a shite about the bowl games. They need to be done away with.

Is the Sugar Bowl still in Mogadishu?
Posted on 12/6/23 at 10:58 am to Tiger Ike
Mog-adjacent.
If you take a cab you can still get to the party areas without getting rolled, raped, and or killed.

I dated a girl who's dad was on the committee and even headed it one year. It was sweet as hell being able to go on the field pregame and getting 40 yard line club seats each year. In just 3 years, I met Tom Benson, Joe Horn, Marques Colston, Archie Manning, Sean Payton, Billy Cannon, Chris Rose, and Drew Brees and saw parts of the Superdome that I didn't even know existed.
Once you taste that kind of access it truly sucks to have to go back to being a normal dude

Give me the Sugar Bowl at the grand old Tulane Stadium, outdoors and natural grass, and at a time when there was only a very small number of bowls.
It was a special event way back then. No more.
