Career advice please - very odd situation here

I have been working in the IT field as a tier 2 desktop support for years now. I have been desperate to move onto a server/networking/info security role but have no luck. To put this into perspective, I might have even applied to 1000 jobs but no offers and very few interviews.

This morning, I got a call from a temp agency that wants me to interview for a tier 2 desktop support specifically for networking issues. Layer 1 support would move tickets to the networking queue I would be working on. I am not certain how my position would different from tier 1 and the recruiter didnt divulge that informaiton. However, from my understanding, I would not be configuring ports or access to switches/routers. That would be a step above me.

Here's the funny and yet also somehow depressing part: the company is intending to hire two people as temps and after 6 months one would be made into a permanent employee and the other would be let go!

Anyone hear of this happening before? Should I consider this? I certainly dont want to be out of a job in six months. Once brought on full time the individual would be given training more so on the networking side. I have been desperate to get off desktop support for years now but I dont know about this.

It'd give you at least 6 months of whatever tier you want.
IT jobs are pretty much available many places.

I don’t get it, you said you want to get out of desktop support yet this position is desktop support. You can sign for anything based on what they are “promising” for the future. It never happens.

Also, the Philippinos are coming for your job

We hire temps all of the time.
Most option to come to work for the company full time.
The company usually pays them LESS than what they received hourly from the agency. (Insurance, dental, vision, etc. subsidized by the employer.

Identify as a bi-racial gay transvestite and you're guaranteed a job.

Sounds like you need to be looking for the next level position. Are you in a position to move to support a great opportunity for professional growth? How do you stack up in the certs/degree area? Is your experience in a specific industry or span across a few?

Get certs in whatever you want to get into, desktop support is very hard to leave.

I avoid contract offers like the plague. Did it once and never again. I just find promises made by a company almost never pan out.

Take the job on what it currently offers your career, not what they “promise” down the road. Budgets have a funny habit of shrinking.

You have to take the Networking courses and get the Certs on your own time to move into a 'real IT' job in networking/infrastructure.

We have a guy doing exactly that for us. He started as a Support Analyst and has moved up to Network Admin b/c he took full advantage of all the free training subscriptions through Pluralsight. And he went and took the tests on his own in the New Orleans area.

Pluralsight has a shite ton of free content for tech training

Problem now days is, you could be head and shoulders better then the other person, but because of your sex and/or skin color could be easily let go.

Do you have your certifications? CISSP, CSSK, CSSP? It not, you should take whatever job makes you most happy and rip through those as fast as you can.
