So the property next to my Mom's place is a dump. The house is vacant and has been for awhile. The yard is full of trash, debris, old appliances, couches, etc. To my surprise, the owner had a guy there two friday's ago cutting the weeds/grass & saplings using weedeaters. One with twine and one with a metal blade.

About 10 minutes after I lit a brush pile on fire on the mountain behind moms, this guy starts yelling for help, saying he was bleeding to death, somebody call 911. I ran down to the other side of the house where he was and expected to see that the metal blade had flew off and into his leg. It turned out to be a metal wire poking out of the front of his leg and him bleeding all over the place. The wire looked about the diameter of cow fencing. He was in a panic cause he couldn't dial out to get 911 and he didn't have a ride. My phone was able to dial 911 and a couple minutes later a KY State Trooper pulled up and put a real tourniquet on him til an ambulance got there. He had to be flown out on a helicopter cause the local hospital doesn't have a surgeon.

Apparently the weeds were so high he didn't see the wire and the metal blade pulled it up out of the ground and shot it into his leg. Dude was shook.

I have a metal blade for my weedeater but use it sparingly. My advice is to pick yer trash up before trying to cut an overgrown yard with one.

Picture of State Trooper applying tourniquet. The wire is hard to see but it's sticking out of the front of his leg and bends back around like a horseshoe.

Thats an expensive weedeater cleanup. Good food for thought. God bless that state trooper. I can't imagine constantly being called for people's worst days and events.

Hope the owner has good liability on his homeowner's policy. Good cautionary tale though.

Any shine up in them hills?

In Kentucky you have 3 choices:
1) Coal mine
2) Moon Shine
3) Or moving on down the line

I watch those YT videos where dudes will clean up an overgrown property for free if they can get permission to film the entire thing. It amazes me with two things:

1. How terribly unkept these properties become (but there can be many factors that would make that happen)

2. How few accidents these guys experience. Some of the overgrowth is insane and there's no knowing what's under there until you cut it up.

i went and looked it up and sb mowing is who i get fed a lot.

he's obviously working with some trash houses, but the clean lines he leaves are pretty astounding after he finishes.

Thread and pic checks out.

A helicopter trip for some wire stuck in leg? He's going to be making payments on those medical bills for a while....or the landowner.

i had a corded electric string trimmer many years ago and was trying to get some weeds next to my house and the cord caught (for the 1,000th time) and when i tried to yank it, it didn't budge and instead the trimmer base swung like a pendulum into my ankle

i think i counted about 40 individual lacerations. amazing how many times that thing spun around in that .07 of a second.

after i wrapped my wound in an old tshirt and duct tape i put the trimmer in the garbage and went to home depot and bought a gas powered model the same afternoon.

I seen one cat that was doing one of those clean ups and noticed that some windows were open with a very distinct smell coming from them. He called the law and sure enough there was a dead person in there.

You sure a tourniquet was applied? Don't you more often than not lose anything below after the tourniquet is applied?

Family man was brush cutting using steel blade in Olla La. Blade came off, bounced up, cut his femoral artery in upper thigh. Bled to death before ambulance could arrive.True story. Beware.

I’m not a doctor by any means but no that’s not the case, but they are generally applied as a last resort to save the life anyway. You can’t leave it on with 0 blood flow to the limb for extended periods for sure.

I think you are supposed to occasionally loosen to get new blood to the area below the tourniquet. Not sure how long this can go on. Depends on how fast you are losing blood, I suppose.
