If you consider inside national parks "wild", then yes.
They are definitely wild, with the exception being if it has grown comfortable around humans. People are so shitty in the smokies at times.

Neighbor took this a couple nights ago.
Lots of options.

When I was a kid in the early 70's we had them in our yard pretty regularly in Dawson County, Georgia. Bastards loved to eat out of the garbage cans.
I have seen a few in NC and in Tennessee and several in Florida.
All of these were of course black bears and most were smallish. None were very big at all. I have seen 2 Grizzlies in BC. Completely different critter LOL. Both of those were from the cab of my truck and they were hauling arse away from me...and they still made me pretty nervous. The black bears I have encountered were more akin to big raccoons.

I’ve seen several in Yellowstone. Had one try to get in a tent with me in the Bighorn National forest while fly fishing in Wyoming.

Plenty of times between the Smokies, Tetons, Glacier National Park etc. Never had a bear encounter that felt dangerous but sure thought a deer was going to spook and whip my arse because it insisted on waking within 2 feet of me.
Here's a bear photo, one of 5 cubs playing in a tree while 2 patient mothers slept on the ground below.

Saw a bunch of black bear around the Smokies over the years. Went to Alaska on a fishing trip but never saw one. Saw many moose while salmon fishing that would get too close for comfort.
Seeing more and more pictures of smaller black bears near my house in North Alabama so it may be a matter of time before I see one out and about.

Upstate New York a few years back on a ski trail (which was a hiking trail in the summer).

Four times—twice on my grandfather’s property, once on mine, and once along the road in Washington Parish. All sightings prob about 15-20 years ago though.

Once. Me and my kids were hiking Mount Mitchell, in North Carolina, a few years back. About halfway up the trail, I started hearing really loud crunches of leaves and I told everyone to "stop", as it was much larger sounding than a deer.
Poor thing saw us and started running back down the mountain. I told the kids "just stay here for a minute". Once the black bear realized we weren't there to mess with him, he walked back up the mountain, across the trail, and on his way. We took about a 10 minute break just to make sure he was further up the mountain than us, and went on our way. Very awesome experience.

I saw about 50 in Chicago once. Very docile. Played dead for 4 quarters.

Friend,
I nearly ran over a black bear in the North Cascades a few weeks ago. I was running down a trail trying to make it to the NP store before they closed. A black bear was munching on some bushes or berries just around a switchback. I turned left on the trail and was within five feet of him when he high tailed it down the mountain. He was far more scared than I was. There were a few hikers down the trail who were frozen in fear and looked at me like I was insane. I kept running.
One day I will share with you the story of how a grizzly in Montana nearly brought my story to an early end. Grizzlies are terrible and I am terrified of them. Black bears do not even cause me to pause. If a black bear ever decided to attack me I have full confidence I could defend myself. There is no confidence if a grizzly did.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

The level of stupidity of people when they see a bear in the smokies is unbelievable. People that pull over near the bears to get out and take a picture is crazy. I think it was sometime last year saw one with two cubs near Roaring Fork and people were pushing the limit to get a picture.

Tons. They usually wave at me asking for food in the zoo.

Locals will rip you a new one if they catch that happening here.

In Colorado living in Roxborough Park near Arrowhead Golf Course. Bears, Mountain Lions, Coyotes, etc.
There is a park at the entrance to Roxborough and we were there with my 1-2 year old son kicking a ball and slides etc. While I was holding him on the swing there was a bear, about 300 plus lbs. coming down the draw running towards us.
I stood with my son watching what it would do and it continued towards us up to the 4 foot fence. Once it started climbing the fence we sprinted to our truck ready to drive away, and it came to the swing set area still looking at us.
I don't know which one of us he was focused on eating, but that was an incredible adrenaline rush.
