If his philosophy is to find yourself over the first few weeks, then a major priority moving forward has to be ensuring that we don't start the year against quality opponents. We can't keep punting early games because our coaching staff doesn't want to sell out and prepare our team for week 1 against the specific opponent.

This philosophy is used by Bill Belichick most famously, but it is effective in the NFL where a few early losses aren't that costly. In CFB, if your goal is a national title, you can't punt any game. Way too much variance ahead of you with 11 more games and an SEC schedule to put up an early L.

Set the tone for the season and handle business.

Well we may need to scrimmage southern before the season opener next season.

With expansion I disagree. Prior to expansion I agree.

Agreed. All the downvotes will be the biggest complainers when USC beats us next year if we take the same approach.

It’s likely always going to take a minute if we continue to be somewhat reliant on the portal for starters.

No.

Certainly prefer Home/Home vs the semi-neutral site games.

Disagree given the 12 team playoff. If we are not a champion and are looking for one of the 6 remaining spots, it will matter more that we lost close to one of the five champions than if we beat some cupcake once folks start splitting hairs.

A 12 team playoff is going to put a premium on big wins more than a spotless record. There'll be plenty of two loss teams getting in. Maybe even the occasional three loss team. I'm not crazy about expanding it that far, (I think six with two byes would be ideal and include every realistic contender), but it should lead to more quality early season matchups rather than the fewer that you're advocating.

Losing 2 games isn’t going to keep us out of the playoffs. I’d rather play the tough out of sec game to start the year than during the sec play. Win or lose, we can learn before the prime games that actually matter to the sec rankings. One loss in the sec won’t eliminate us.

I disagree. By playing a tough opponent you get to see where you are, and give your team a reality check.

LSU lost to FSU because of defensive miscommunication and the players not trusting one another. They seem to have fixed that before SEC play began. If they had started off playing NSU, would they have even realized the issues?

Les fricking Miles had little trouble taking on and beating quality opponents to start off the season.

Perhaps Brian Kelly can just do a better job of coaching to get the team ready to play.

So how do you explain A&M last year? Tennessee? Georgia?

With a 12 team playoff next year you can certainly afford an opening game loss, SFP.

Hell just do a charity scrimmage with Tulane or ULL. Sell tickets, night game, stream it.

Do that in lieu of your last team scrimmage

Goal 1. Win the West. In order to do that will have plenty quality wins. Beat FSU and lose the West, you aren’t getting in this year. Too many quality teams across college football
Goal 2. Win the SEC
Accomplish 1&2, make playoffs. Don’t accomplish 1&2, win over FSU doesn’t get you in.
Point is doesn’t matter OOC win/loss if win conference so it’s more like NFL than it used to be

My thoughts exactly, unless we change our preparation for our first game. Two years in a row we've seemed unprepared for top competition. Last year it was easy to give Kelly and staff a pass. This year--not so much.

First of all, well done.

Second, I remember a time when Miles and O were HCs and LSU would challenge their teams to compete within the first 2 opponents. Miami, Wisconsin, Washington, BYU, Texas, etc.

Now that Kelly is here, we need at least two pushovers so that part of the fan base can get a dopamine boost early in the season and believe that LSU has all the pieces to make a run for the NC, instead of waiting until the season takes shape.
