The LDWF can’t stop the Pogey boats. The State Legislature has to do this and they didn’t have the votes last year.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission will consider a notice of intent at the Thursday, Nov 5 meeting in Baton Rouge to create a 1-mile buffer off Louisiana’s beaches where pogey boats won’t be allowed to fish.

How can there be a slot if they are eliminating bulls?
Based on the below they are basically proposing that you can only keep 4 reds and those 4 most all fall between 17" and 25".
quote:
-No harvest of bull reds
-4 fish bag limit per angler
-slot adjusted to 17”-25”

Looks like I was wrong. I guess they tried to use the legislature to bypass the LDWF. Good to know.

I've got no issue with the proposed changes. I am of the opinion that charter guides shouldn't be allowed to catch and give their limit to clients. Many guides run both morning and afternoon trips so that's just taking that many more fish out of the population.

The limit is a daily limit not a trip limit. Guides that are doing that are already breaking the law.
ETA- had a moron in GA brag online that he got his opening day dove limit by noon, then went back out and got another limit in the evening. DNR busted his dumb arse. It was his private field so I don't even care much how many he shot, but the stupidity of bragging about it online deserves punishment alone.

And it's those same guides that are raising hell about it too!

People in Louisiana like to regale stories from a time before limits. When the take was as many ice chests as you brought. It's always been about the meat. Some self restraint might have kept the govt. wolves at bay but everyones out for the meat, not the future well being.

frick all that.
Even the guide limit shite. What if I go fishing with my friend who is a guide. I may or may not pay him. It’s all cash. The ldwf doesn’t need to know shite.

I’m fine with the over 12” and only 2 over 19”, but I fail to see the necessity to only allow 15 fish. They have yet to present any substantive proof that there is even an issue to begin with. People started getting their panties in a bunch when they couldn’t understand why it was tough to catch specks in years/areas with high River water. The last two years with better conditions the fishing has been off the charts in most areas.
Fwiw I have no issue with eliminating the guide limit.

I’m always conflicted by the new regs because I’m fundamentally not a fan of government regulation but I also realize Louisiana is so incredibly far behind when it comes to conservation and investing in the future of our fishery.
I’m a fan of the only 2 over 19” and not allowing guide limits.
Not sure how the 15 fish limit helps (most boats don’t bring back 15 fish pp) and the people I’ve talked to researchers who say the best thing we could do for trout would be to increase the size limit to 15””.

People keep wanting proof of everything but it doesn’t exist for either side of the argument. It’s incredibly difficult and expensive to conduct the types of studies needed to feel really confident in the conclusions. Even if there was enough money and resources to conduct those studies we could never complete control for the amount of variables at play in these complex ecosystems.
What you end up with is one side that wants to err on the side of caution and another side who is concerned with the thought of never ending government regulation.
Ideally LA anglers would self limit but we have a long long long way to go before anglers here start thinking about conservation on the level of FL or TX anglers. The good news is we have some of the most passionate outdoorsman in the country so I think it’s possible we eventually get there.

I agree that most boats don’t bring back 15pp but My view on this is not really science based as it is practical for my family. 15 trout per person is plenty for me to cook for them as I never freeze fish. Just my opinion.

Yeah dude, this is definitely a beers on boat discussion but this is an issue where we need both the government and individuals to step up.
Not only are our regulations woefully out of date and far too lax, but our angling culture hasn't yet caught up to our neighbors. That said, as we know, laws only work on the people who follow them - so it's still up to folks with a mouth piece to encourage responsible fishing.
Everyone has a part to play.
