Trout and Redfish Changes coming…
Fellow anglers: It’s been a bit quiet on the speckled trout and redfish regulations issue in recent months, but please be aware that I do expect BOTH WILL BE ON THE WLF COMMISSION AGENDA NEXT WEEK. (Thursday, July 6 at 9:30am at LDWF). I believe they will consider (and likely approve) the following…
TROUT
-15 fish bag limit per angler
-12 inch minimum
-2 fish over 19” per angler
-Eliminating the guide limit on charter trips
-These changes will sunset in three years
-to be implemented later this fall
REDFISH
-No harvest of bull reds
-4 fish bag limit per angler
-slot adjusted to 17”-25”
-eliminating the guide limit on charter trips
-this is a new Notice of Intent, so implementation would likely be around the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024.
Whatever your opinion on these changes, let them know what you think. You can send comments to comments@wlf.la.gov or make comments in person next Thursday at 9:30am at the meeting. (2000 Quail Drive, Baton Rouge)

Not really upset about the changes, but it fails to address a lot of issues (pogie boats, etc.) that are a bigger part of the problem in my opinion.

What is a guide limit on charter trips? This is not something I'm familiar with,

If you have 2 people on boat and one guide you are allowed to catch 3 limits basically

The change would make it where his limit could not be kept

This could be a deal killer. Would really impact winning weights for tournaments and be a hard pill to swallow allowing good 16"eaters swim...

Besides the 17” min on reds I have no issues with any of this.

I’d rather the slot for reds at 20”-30” 2 per person.

For Louisiana anything over the current upper slot of 27", for Texas, over 28"?

It's unofficially set by the respective states upper slot limit, but for some of us on the water it could be a number slightly lower. For me, the 24" to 25" inch red is about the biggest I'm willing to put on ice. If I have a young kid on board I may be willing to be flexible.

If you put the time and attention into it you can get a lot of use out of one fish in terms of eating potential.

Throats/collars
Cheeks
fins
fillet portions
seafood stock from heads and carcas

All of it can be put to use outside of the guts

30” reds start to get tough.

I’d rather they have increased the minimum slot to 18 or 19” and left 27” upper slot alone. I’m good with no bulls being allowed

What is the "guide limit" they're talking about getting rid of?

The LDWF can’t stop the Pogey boats. The State Legislature has to do this and they didn’t have the votes last year.

Not allowing the guides to keep their limit on charter trips. In other words, if a guide brings 3 clients fishing right now, the boat can come back with 20 redfish (3 client limits + 1 guide limit). If you eliminate the guide limit, the guide no longer counts as a person on the boat, so the boat can only come back with 15 ( a limit for each client).

Well, then I am having a brain-cloud. How can there be a slot if they are eliminating bulls?
