sounds like a gambler's mentality. That attitude alone tells you that nothing is going to change.

100%

Any sort of compulsion (up through addiction) has this same mentality. "Oh I'll quit smoking once I finish this pack." "I'll stop spending money once we get over this hump." "I'll start eating right and exercising on Monday." (a famous one from me).

Dont know if he outright owns any of that and he might owe more than he could sell them for. Didnt get that far in conversation though

Only lend him what you can afford not to get back. Assume you will never see it again and you won't get your feelings hurt.

Depending on the amount, just let him use one of his boats for collateral. He doesn't pay you back, keep the boat.

That's not a terrible idea.

Well, its a better idea to buy it outright with an agreement to sell it back to him at a set price within a set time. that way you don't have to foreclose if he defaults since you already own it. No lawyers, no court. He doesn't come up with the money and you sell it to someone else.

Which is why this whole story feels very fake or at least heavily embellished.

This is just lighting money on fire and ending up in the same shitty spot (possibly leading to another ask).

You did. If you truly thought of him as a friend, you would have helped him out. Instead, you come here looking to clear your mind....you should contact him and take him what he needs
Completely wrong. You're an enabler.

I think you did the right thing. Until people take personal responsibility for their actions, nothing changes.
What I've done is give them a gift card to a grocery store. It's up to them at that point.
You could also suggest a financial advisor, which can be free at banks.

Yup — if the friend were serious, he’d sell his truck and get a 5 year old Toyota or Honda commuter car (let the wife keep the kid hauler), sell the toys, STOP EATING OUT, and limit vacations to once a year, and tell the kids they get one extracurricular activity if it costs money, private schooling for the kids would be the last thing I’d cut (depending on where they live).

He’s not looking for a solution if he hasn’t taken these common sense steps first.

It’s crazy that something like rising insurance premiums is enough to put a person in the position that they’re begging friends for money.

Love the guy and his wife but will admit they are the classic 80-90k millionaires that the OT talks about. He drives a new f150. She drives a 2 year old Yukon XL. Big into their kids sports and spend a ton of money doing that half their weekends. Kids in private school. 2 or 3 vacations a year. Has 2 boats and a side by side. Eat out all the time.

I wouldnt even ask a friend until most of this shite was gone. What a dick.

that's just what's tipping the scale, bottom line is his friend is over extended and is financially irresponsible

Either that or the friend is trying the hide the financial troubles from his own wife/family, and selling those things would tip them off.

You are right and he needs to trim some fat. After that if he needed assistance, I wouldn't hesitate.
